Also, surviving spouses can receive a benefit as well. My Dad served during the Korean War, received his ALS diagnosis in January of 2012, and began receiving his monthly benefits in March. Since he passed, my Mom now receives a monthly survivor's benefit (about a third of what my Dad received).
