  • Hey Mike....I usually fatigue at 15-20 minutes, then change to the recumbent bike for 15-20. If I keep my legs moving I can usually get thru the regimen. Where my biggest problem lies is when I have to stand still ( waiting for a clerk or in line somewhere) after about 10-15 mins my legs start to burn and the muscles get so tight that it is difficult to walk. If I can't sit down after 15 min I am in trouble, sitting for extended periods makes my legs get stiff and when I stand up I have to be careful until I can walk it off.
Funny... seems like every time a deployment came up my wife had equal parts dread and relief. I think you're onto something! We're pups though, only having been married for 32 years.
Congratulations, Master Chief! One of my biggest disappointments in going enlisted-to-commissioned was that I would not get to make Sgt Major.
At my commissioning my brother, also a career Marine, said "Good day, 2nd Lt, you have now become the person you've always despised!" That kick in the gut lasted until the first payday, but he was right.
Glad your boy is happy in the Corps... best 8 years I ever spent doing anything! I did a short one week trip on a sub (USS Kamehameha) and gained a new respect for the Navy. My wife's uncle was a Navy pilot who flew in Vietnam and later with the Blue Angels... the guy was NEVER home so at the tie of my enlistment I figured the USMC was the way to go.
    Mike,
No Navy time, but spent 8 years in the USMC and 14 in the USAF. First time I heard the '10 man working party' line was from a Sgt at Camp Lejeune talking about the new 2nd Lt... "Couldn't find his ass with a map and a 10 man working party!"
I thought that was funny, and then 8 years later I was the new 2nd Lt!! Not so funny then.

    Hi Mike,
Thought I'd check in with you? How are you doing? My dad is doing reasonably well. He is losing more use of his hands and is going back to using a bi-pap at least at night for starters. His breathing isn't real bad yet but he does get pretty fatigued easily so they thought it might help him. I am going to take the kids to see him in June. I am a terrified driver and it's 12 hrs away. I think we are going to try taking the train this time. Take care, Kim
I go to the ALS clinic in Charlotte. No one has said anything about PLS being a form of ALS! Where did you hear this? Or am I just ignorant?
it was very helpful--he used it for about a year. then his emotional problems subsided and he backed out of it. very few side effects and worked quickly. go for it you will be glad you did.
I went to the ALS clinic in Charlotte today and I got some info about PLS reclassified as ALS. At this clinic they word the diagnosis as "Upper Motor Neuron Predominant ALS". They said to get your neurologist to dictate the diagnosis with this terminology and it should be accepted by the VA. All the PLS vets that they have worked with (several I know of) have been accepted. The main Neuro Dr at CMC Neurology previously worked at VA hospitals and is now one best ALS doctors in the field.

I was an ET, spent 6 yrs in Japan, favorite was Sasebo then DDG-9 out of Yokosuka. Had 4 more yrs at NAS Pt Mugu. Only had 11 yrs in, got out in 88 ET-1. Wanted to try college out (g/f insisted), didn't do too good but oh well. Did you serve on both coasts? You liked enough to stay in 30 so you must of liked it.
Hey Mike, fellow squid here with the ALS, so luckily I'm 100% covered with the VA. I'm hoping you, someone in your family or someone will help you push the paperwork for VA qualification. Have you been contacted by the DAV or PVA, the PVA rep. helped me out and the clinic linked me to the PVA. So I'm hoping you have someone in your corner. Right now speech is very hard and I can move my head and left arm some. I try to do all that I can by myself, then ask for help. Even before I got the van through the VA we would rent a van to go out as much as we could. Everyone wants to go do the things I would like but I insist on doing things for them too. Soon I wont be able to eat out due to swallowing problems but I still want go out with them. I've got plans on going to some KY wildcats games if we can get tickets. So don't give up to this disease, instead do all you can and have fun, have great times, and give others a better memory you.
Thinking of you Mike. Sorry, you have to go through all of this. You are in my prayers. Feel free to vent on here all you want. We are hear to listen and lend support as best we can. Kim
I believe your CMC friend grew up in Springfield, IL like me. Last I heard he was in Millington. If the VA won't qualify you with PLS, you probably qualify for disability retirement through FERS. Find a copy of the federal almanac (HR should have one) and check it out. 60% of your high 3. Been at Pax 13 years. Maybe it is all that jet fuel in the water.
