  • Hello fellow Forum members,
I am a mother, grandmother, and writer. My son-in-law Joe, a Boston marathon runner, was diagnosed in 1994. He was 34 and learned that he had ALS the same week his second son was born. I became his caregiver and lived with my daughter's family part-time and then full-time for about two years. After that paid caregivers took over, but he lived at home until his death from pneumonia. Joe had bulbar onset but because of his excellent care and underlying good health, he out-ran the disease for fourteen years. One way he kept his spirits up was to start "Joe's list." This was a daily joke that he sent out to all who wanted a laugh. Having a sense of humor was a real asset in coping with the disease. I look forward to making some new friends.
