    Time

I agree with Cindy that you cannot estimate....many people live with it for years and others for only a short time. My mother's case is very similar to yours....diagnosed in 08/2006, PEG tube in 03/2007, started BiPAP 07/2007 and I lost her on 08/18/2007. Do not, however, let my case...

    Mom went Home Again

Hi everyone, My mom passed early yesterday afternoon. I want to thank all of you for your warmth, compassion, love and complete understanding as you helped me battle her disease. She is at peace now, roller skating with my Dad and probably screaming with delight (she has her voice back now...

    Might be time for BiPap

Thanks everyone. I did talk to her about it last night, and explained that people with sleep disorders use it too; that it's not a ventilator. She seems much more accepting of the idea now. Thanks for the f.y.i. on the nose pillows, I will make sure I mention it. I did read some other...

    Copd

My mother had COPD for one year prior to being diagnosed with ALS. She had been on O2 24/7 for that time. Since her diagnosis, lung function is decreasing rapidly and we found out today that we need to start considering going on a BiPap machine. She is on the Spiriva inhaler and albuterol...

    Might be time for BiPap

Hi everyone! Took mom to her pulmonologist today. He has ordered an ABG (arterial blood gas) blood test to find out if she has too much CO2 in her lungs. He mentioned that we need to start discussing her getting a BiPap machine. As he is telling us this, my mother is shaking her head no. I...

    No feeding tube--what to expect?

I'm so sorry you are going through this. My mom got her feeding tube in March. She did not want one and waited a long time. When she was admitted to the hospital for weakness and a 40-pound weight loss, she decided to go ahead and get it. She is very glad now that she has it, as it is not...

    Excessive mucus

Thanks everyone. Mom has an appointment with her pulmonologist on Tuesday and I will ask her about some of this. What a blessing you all are.

    Excessive mucus

Good morning everyone, Just had Mom to the doctors, her first visit since moving to Michigan. She is still losing weight so I have a call into her dietician. But she is also now having problems with excessive mucus. She has been leaking quite a bit, which we know is part of the ALS; however...

    CVS Pharmacy

Good morning everyone. I went in to my local CVS pharmacy yesterday, and they asked me if I would like to donate $1.00 to help fight Lou Gehrig's disease. I don't know if this is just something my local CVS is doing, or if this is something all CVS pharmacies are doing this week, but just...

I just found out my Mom has ALS

Hi Little One- Just moved my mother in with me this month. She was diagnosed in 08/2006. She has no speech and communication is a challenge. It seems to be the only trouble we are having right now. She gets frustrated and I think she's frustrated with me because I'm making her write...

    Really Need Some Feed Back!

I agree with all entries above, that your dad's oxygen level sounds good. His breathing issues may be from the anxiety. My dad used to have anxiety attacks and he would get very short of breath. Lying down helped him; removing himself from anything stressful as well. Good luck to you!

I also would like to find out where to get a few bracelets. Keep up the work you're doing; it's so important. Lisa

Dad doesn't want a feeding tube

Hi Mama! Sorry it has taken me so long to write back. COPD is chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, aka emphysema. My mom has only had problems with her throat. Speech is almost totally gone and all nutrition is through the PEG tube now. She was on oxygen 24/7 before she was diagnosed with...

Dad doesn't want a feeding tube

HI MAMASARA- WE ARE ALMOST IN THE SAME BOAT. MY MOM DIAGNOSED IN 08/2006 WITH SLURRED SPEECH AND LOST ALL FUNCTION OF SWALLING IN 03/2007. SHE WAS ALSO TOLD SHE WOULD NEED A PEG TUBE AND REFUSED. BUT WHEN SHE WAS RUSHED TO THE HOSPITAL FOR MALNUTRITION, SHE CHANGED HER MIND. SHE IS FIGHTING...
