  • I was outside, ground was just unlevel is all. I normal get around fine with a cane, and it has saved me from falling many times. I stopped using the AFOs because they were causing too much physical stress on my knee joints. Today, the cane kept me upright, but there was an audible snapping sound, I knew right away it wasn't good. We have a manual wheelchair, and the house is supposed to be handicap friendly, so we'll just see how true that is. I really will let you know about the bathroom dimensions and if they're adequate.
So... about me not falling hardly ever.... yes my cane held me up. No, it didn't stop me from getting hurt. Very unhappy camper right now. On the plus side, I'll be able to tell you if the dimensions of my bathroom really will work for a wheelchair. And I'll make sure to report back to you. I was telling my son that while we were in the ER (about your home layout and bathroom plans) My shoulder is not strong enough to even consider crutches, and I'm to be "non weight-bearing" for a week or more.
My dad is hoping to be able to move back to his home which is 1/2 mile from ours. He has a friend that says he will stay with him part-time who has training in taking care of the sick. We will probally have to hire additional help. He has alot of neighbors who check on him too. I imagine my dad will probally go back in forth from Dallas and here for awhile. Dallas has a ALS clinic and our small town doesn't even have a neurologist. Hope he can come home for awhile but want the best care for him. We will hopefully know more on the 12th after his appointment. Hugs, Kim
    Hi Helen,
Thinking of you and hoping your week is going well. Talked to my dad the other day and he is doing pretty well in Dallas got back and forth from my brother and sister's homes. He really misses home and my kids though. I am having a hard time since I miss him so much. Sending you a big hug. Stay strong. People do care! Kim
That's me... Must've been something I said... We're on day 4 of automatic moderation.... I'm trying to be good! 8))))
    Hi Helen,
Love the pictures and congratulations on your daughter's graduation!
I'd like to comment publicly, but I keep getting sent to moderation and I'm not sure what I've done wrong... In your experience, will they tell me?

    Thanks,
    Jen
You are a dear. I see where you stepped into the fray tonight, and thank you, I'm just not up for it. Sometimes all anyone needs is some compassion, and that seems to be in short supply. xo
(the 72" measurement was base of front of toilet to shower wall, so the 105 is from wall behind toilet to opposing shower wall....)
From the shower wall opposite the toilet to the wall behind the toilet, it s about 105". Then, the other direction, it is 80 at the widest point, but then the doorway angles to the 46" shower. Completely confusing isn't it? Its just that the room isn't rectangular. But, it would be if we didn't have to have a front door to the house LOL. If you have the length, look at the photos in Al Marble's album (I posted a link on that women's thread) His bathroom didn't seem wide, but it was long. Be greedy, take as much space as you can for the bathroom, it can only add to the valued of the house if its done well. You will love having the bidet toilet, and I'm MOBILE can't lift my arm up but I can walk without falling down very often :)
    Hi Helen,

Unfortunately, he's getting very weak very quickly. He was using a walker to get to the bathroom just last week, but now can't stand for a transfer from bed to bedside commode. We started hospice Friday. He is sleeping a lot and we are just trying to keep him comfortable. thank you for thinking of us :)
So long as there are no issues with load bearing walls, you should be fine. (we almost made the DR my bedroom, chose the family room instead, that way I have the deck off of it) :) Look up the ADA code standards, they're actually helpful, and remember to take into consideration existing duct work. And, if there is a wall problem, you could maybe make it a half wall or use glass block and make it part of the shower somehow, YKWIM

For shear beauty, Mare has pictures posted of a beautiful bathroom modification, and she told me she plans to post more, as they did more...

Your house is so charming, if it were mine I'd be hard pressed to find the heart to try to sell it!
The shower is 36"D X 46"L and from far wall of shower to base of toilet (where one's feet would be) it is 72" (that's the short side of shower rectangle) The doorway is 32" and it is slightly angled into the room. Far wall to wall next to doorway from wall by basin to wall that toilet sits at is 80". The two drains make the shower possible to be a "roll in" (and of course the fact that there is no lip to roll over) but, water when the shower is running spreads enough to where its always a hassle with the mat in front of the toilet getting wet if I don't remember to move it over out of the way. A small matter, but still something to keep in mind. If I was in a wheelchair/shower chair, I'm sure we just would have no mats on the floor.
