    Respiratory Weakness Early- Typical Path

Thank you. She has a finger oximeter and her levels are almost always below 90% when she is awake so I would imagine it is low 80's while sleeping( at the hospital without oxygen it was 82-85 while on her bipap) She has a Respironics avap. It is set for 8-25 for pressure and 500 ml for volume...

    Respiratory Weakness Early- Typical Path

Ok I'm sorry. I was just trying to provide as much information as possible. I don't want to do anything that will exacerbate her problems.

And for what it's worth she was taking 15-20 breaths per minute while sleeping on bipap with oxygen

She is on BiPAP. They want to have oxygen with the BiPAP while she sleeps. She has an ALS Clinic.

    Respiratory Weakness Early- Typical Path

The surgery went ok, but they did an arterial blood gas draw and found PaO2 41 and pCO2 59. They panicked and sent her to the ICU for another night and added supplemental oxygen. The next morning the levels were PaO2 71 pCO2 52. They are sending her home with oxygen for use while sleeping. They...

    Respiratory Weakness Early- Typical Path

She does use a BiPAP. She has a hiatal hernia and I believe a general surgeon is going to perform the procedure because of that. Is there something else I need to request? Is there a risk she will need emergency ventilation that she might not be able to come off of?

    Respiratory Weakness Early- Typical Path

I know it's been said FVC is not a good indicator, but It seems hers has rapidly declined. Looking back at her first testing for shortness of breath, it was 61%. This was in early October. Late January was 34%. This week the guy said 16%, but honestly he didn't seem to know what he was...

    Respiratory Weakness Early- Typical Path

She has a bipap and uses it at night only. Peter, what was your FVC when you were diagnosed vs now? My mom's first als clinic is Monday so we'll get to hear all our options as well as see how the numbers have changed since she was diagnosed a month ago. Mom has lost one muscle in her left hand...

    Respiratory Weakness Early- Typical Path

I read in another thread that there are a few on here that had respiratory issues early on and they all seemed to follow the same path, but I haven't found a post that talks about how the disease progressed. My Mom had a FVC of 34% when she was diagnosed last month. Her symptoms started with...

My Mom's Diagnosis- Sporadic Bulbar Onset ALS

The CO2 was from a blood sample. She started the bipap as soon as she got back home and said she sleeps better now.

My Mom's Diagnosis- Sporadic Bulbar Onset ALS

It was sometime last spring when my Mom's voice started sounding hoarse. She discounted it as being sick since she typically loses her voice once a year for a couple weeks when she gets a cold. In June, my best friend got married and she couldn't stop crying. She said she was just tired ,but...
