I have ALS, and my husband has Parkinson's with dementia. He's worse off than I am right now.
About your mom's crying ... "emotional lability" is part of ALS. People cry (or laugh) when they don't want to, or they overreact. Basically, what is happening in her brain is affecting emotional responses. She may not feel unhappy, but the crying happens outside her control. This problem can be solved with medications. I went through this, too, but the doctors have it under control. Ask your mom's neuro about getting some relief for this. It will reduce her stress ... and yours ... a lot. Good luck! Beth
