    where is everybody?

milanupa, I am so very sorry for the fact that you are going though this now. Here is the facts: You may be going through this for quite a long time. That is the hard fact. SO: what you very very seriously need to do is to find help. I am not suggesting therapy, anti-depressants, etc. A lot of...

Hi Kim, Mom passed away September 8th. Yes, she lived a long time with Bulbar! Her neurologist told her if he knew what she was doing, he would tell his other patients. I think it was keeping busy and not letting it get her down and a good attitude. My mom never took antidepressants, she was...

is there a way to reduce mucus/saliva production? and regarding papaya tablets...

Yes, Om felt like she was drowning as well. Do you have a suction machine to help with this? We used the suction machine, which was very helpful. But strangely sometimes the suction machine seemed to stimulate the salivary glands to produce more. I hope the Benadryl helps.

    UGH! Aggravated!

I am so sorry and I pray for the best for your family and abundance of peaceful memories. It will take some time, but you will soon get to a place where you can smile and remember your son's WHOLE life, and not only his life with ALS. It is a blessing.

Mom's saliva/drooling was also such a pain in the rear. We would fold paper towels into squares which she for the longest time would just hold in her mouth to absorb the saliva. Eventually we tried Benedryl and it was a godsend. Small dose, one every 12 hours, and it worked so well! Glycopyrrol...

    Mom passed last night

BlueK58, I am touched by your writing. My mom passed 3 1/2 weeks ago from Bulbar ALS. Being a CALS was the hardest thing I have ever been through. I would do it all again in a second. She was my rock and my steady. I could only hope that I would have the strength she did and my life is so...

    how would you respond?

Joe, We did as several others have suggested: We typed up a list of things that Mom needed, from the first morning rituals to the time that the caregiver was "wrapping up" at the end of the day. This list included how to position Mom's arm, how she liked her blanket, her glasses, her tv remote...

Katie C, I saw your post to another "past caregiver". You said that you had nightmares. I wanted to ask you about this. Mom has been gone only six days. I have had nightmares almost nightly. Most mornings I wake and I am okay: The nightmare was about trying to find or ask someone to help out...
