Presently I’m setting down for 12 hrs and in bed 12 hrs every day. Starting to have pain on my bottom and lower back when setting, I’m setting on a 4” foam cushion, still able to stand up for a minute and do so every couple of hours but the pain returns quickly. Is there anything I can get or do to eliminate the pain?

I have the same butt pain problem with a 4” foam cushion and spend the same time as you do in bed and wheelchair.

I also have a Roho seat cushion that I’m not using because it deflates mid afternoon every day which really puts me on a hard surface. Can’t figure this out but a Roho working properly is very comfortable

In the wheelchair you need to adjust your recline and tilt whenever possible to reduce pressure - the other thing that helps me is a few hours each day in my recliner.

I'm in the same situation, except I'm unable to stand anymore. I had a good friend who gave me a memory foam pillow. (good brand name not a generic version ) I Place it under my bottom at night. I use (try not to laugh to hard ) A baby boppi backwards on my chair during the day. The legs (not sure how to describe it ) support each hip, while my thighs are supported the front, leaving the problem area untouched. Since I have been using these methods My sores have healed, no new ones have appeared, and honestly I don't have any soreness . Of course this is just my experience. I can tell you I was at my wits end before trying these things.

I would look at the back angle of the chair and where your butt is -- it's not just the cushion, but how much you are loading onto your seat. There are Roho patch kits if a leak is the problem. Also, Stimulite (Supracor) makes a cushion that may be better suited for recliners.

Thanks for the replies. I’m going to try the Roho cushion and see if it works. I don’t have any padding on my bottom anymore, my weight started at 150 and now is 101 and dropping.

I weigh the same as you. I have had no sores in a year and a half on my Roho wheelchair seat, though I do tilt a little every so often. I used to have hip pain in bed but I followed advice on this forum to buy a natural latex mattress pad and it made a huge difference. I don't move at night and so far, no sores. KNOCK on wood!

All good suggestions! I forgot to say in bed I sleep all night on my back. So, moving the angle of the hospital bed and having an alternating air topper for the mattress seems to help me. So far no bed sores at all. Just a painful bottom at end of day.

I live in my golden technologies recliner 22 hours a day. I am about 160lbs. Paralyzed from shoulders down. Have been living in my chair for over 2 years almost never leaving it. I rely on a bipap to breathe and don't have the financial/people resources to be out much. I am totally comfortable and take no medication. Your results may vary, but here are some things that I have done to stay comfortable:

- I got the brisa fabric option. It is easy to clean and breathes well
- chair has zero gravity and Trendellenburg position, and I use the full range of motion often
- power headrest option
- I modified the control so I can move my position with my computer with no help. Very important to not stay in a position that hurts, it builds up over time
- I wear flannel pj pants, but found they have to be very loose to avoid pressure points on the butt
-High temperature is not your friend - avoid sweat
-every night before bed, I bend my legs up and put my arms above my head for at least an hour. It makes me feel better for the rest of the night as it is a real challenge to sleep with out moving on the sides
- I have never seen a PT. But regular range of movement is key. Every morning I get hoisted to the bathroom chair and take every opportunity to bend my body in every way. I am amazed at how little time it takes to just keep everything moving and not freezing up
It's taken some mental fortitude, but I am currently comfortable . Hope this helps , Jim

Why not try CBD Oil, it is a relaxant and a pain reliever. I use it every day with good results.

For my PALS we changed position in the recliner chair quite often, and I would lift and prop the knees onto the arm rest. We referred to this as “the frog” just to give it a socially-appropriate term, but it seemed to do the trick in terms of pressure relief. Not sure if height/weight would be a factor but my PALS is tall (for a woman) and skinny and this helped her feel more comfortable in the chair.

Hey, Jim!

thanks so very much for your post! I clipped it and saved it for future reference.... I’m not quite as far along as you are and as far as the ‘people’ resources - ditto. What do you do when you feel ‘restless’? (Or maybe you don’t?)

I also have issues with my hips being in pain. It’s either whatever muscle there is left or it’s bone (?). Any recommendations?

Thank you again for your detailed insight :)

Restless? This is something I have had to adjust to. I have had to get used to living in a cyber bubble kinda life. Keeping my brain busy. I had uncomfortable hips until I got my legs aligned right. I use a small pc of fabric 18"x 36" and rap around my knees to keep my legs closer and straighter. Simple but really helpful. I have posted a detailed description of my room and tech adaptations and attached it to this post if you are interested. I'm in SoCal if you ever need to check out the setup. All the best
