Hi everyone i know i worry too much.....But we are being hit with one hell of a storm right now and i am afraid might loose hydro cause supposed to get worse....if it does can i use portable oxygen for him to sleep or is that too dangerous ?.....ANY other suggestions would be helpfull!....Gina

Good question, Gina. Hope your day and evening goes well and hope you don't lose electric power. Maybe somebody with more knowlege than mine will answer soon-before the power goes!

Maybe when the storm is over you might look into a gas-powered generator for your household. That way you can have both lights and medical equipment. Just a thought...Cindy

Hi Gina - my PALS friend and his wife went through this same scare - they got a Battery back up from "Best Buy"- it's damn heavy - size of a car battery - but supposed to back up all his current / future medical needs and can move easily on a cart w/ his Cpap.
Should I get you more info? Let me know - I know he did a ton of research B4 buying

I use an Eliminator battery pack from Canadian Tire. Only used it twice once 4 hrs. and another about 6 hrs. Ran the Bipap but not humidifier. 2 would probably be a better idea. They do have an alarm so you know when they are running out of power. They can be recharged in the car but it takes a long time.

Thanks guys i think ill look into the one at canadian tire since it is the closest store to me.Al what kinds money we talking here?Just wanna make sure got enough when i go!....gina

Oh geez jumped the gun again,my son just called and said he has a small one and that he will bring it over to me ...that will at least buy some time..then i might be able to call some of the inlaws and see if they have one also.Brother in law and brother both into construction and all that stuff maybe they can help...i guess i am just so used to doing everything myself it does not occur to me to ask other people for help...really dont wanna drive in this weather and dont want to leave glen either! Thanks all wish me luck!....Gina

Hey just had another thought. What about the big Hotels, motels, do they usually have generators...We live very close to a lot of them so if worse came to worse could go thier!Anybody know about that and which ones would be likely to have them?.......gina

Hey again just wanted to let everyon know that we made it through the night and no power failure.....still snowing a bit but hoping the worst of it is over when the roads are all cleared up i will be looking for a battery pack or other device to make sure that i will be ready for the next storm...Thanks ....GINA

Stay tuned

My Pals Friend is getting me the info on his battery back up - highly recommended - without going broke on a gas /generator. I will post the details tomorrow - but his model was recommended to him from a family member who works for a medical equipment supply- and you can get it at Best Buy For sure!

Stay tuned!

The recommended back up for Bipap / O2

Here is the Best Buy page.

Look at the APC 1500VA or the 1300VA. Either will work. One just gives you longer coverage.

Or just call best buy, or go in and ask for these models of backup battery power.

Good luck and happy holidays to you all

Great Stuff swmn i will definately be purchasing one of these asap.!O.K. ask the nurse from paremed today about sleeping with oxygen on she called the people who provide the portable oxygen and they said it was fine to sleep with it on......The first person that came in to provide the machines the first time and take his levels said that it was he was not to sleep with it on....what gives with that?Anyway paremed nurse question them about it and they assured me to use the portable if hydro went out and to not worry?Geez latest weather forecast predicating another storm this weekend! How many days till spring? lol......Gina

Oh Gina, I wish I could sen you some of our nice weather. It was really nice today, cloudy, and a nice breeze. It is 9:45 PM now, and it is 70 degrees. I can't believe this! Christmas is a few days away, and it is still so warm. I'd hate to see what summer is going to be like! I hate summer in Texas, especially Houston! God bless!

Hi Gina -
It has to be so hard to determine what to do when you have conflicting advice from equally quallified professionals.... I know my pals is concerned about usiing O2 too much b'cause it can further deteriorate his ability to breath on his own... But he is not yet in the end stages - just trust your judgement and you and your husband will make the best decisions to keep him comfortable... the battery back up just will ensure a good nights sleep for you both - knowing if Any Power failure happens, you have the support to continue Bipap -o2 function that in itself is so valuable...you both need your rest-

sleep well

Thought I would tell you oxg. does not take the
place of bi-pap. You have to have air forced in your lungs
to breath. Oxygen want help if bi-pap is off. I was
told to do that when my bi-pap went out late one
night. Didnt help any ,I had to stay up all night
untill they brought me a new one.

Davis O.K. Yes that makes sense as to why i got conflicting advice better get that battery pack swmn you are right....Thanks for clearing that up!....Gina
