Hi friends,

Down in NC visiting my mom. She's just now needing the power chair full time, and is much less confident using her walker than she was a few weeks ago. I am wondering whether people have recommendations for loose, comfortable, easy-up-and-down pants for women? We would both still like them to be attractive. As always your suggestions will be gratefully received!

Thanks!

I am still very mobile but found it much easier early on to wear elastic waist knit pants with long knit tops. I still dress very well with this new look. My mother had ALS 20 years ago and we learned what was functional but attractive to wear even then!

I love my wrap skirts, easy to use rest room. I also wear sinple slip over the head long dresses. Hope this helps you....:)

Great question. I've been dealing with this myself. I am still using a walker & can go to bathroom on my own at home; we have a raised toilet so that I can get up. My husband helps me dress. I have been wearin pants larger than I need; mostly jean shorts or capris. I find using a zipper & button easier for me to deal with. I have a very hard time with elastic, can't get the elastic all the way up or down. Haven't tried dresses or skirtss, but maybe I will. But I hate that I look so sloppy wearing big clothes.

Yaga pants are the only thing I wear now now. Very easy if not too tight.

Having to buy items a bit larger than I usually wear helps. I also end up leaning over my bed with my head on a pillow (like a tripod) to pull up the elastic waist. It also helps to fold the legs of the pants back over my knees to keep them from falling to the floor and Ican't reach them. There are some websites that have adaptive clothing but I found them not so stylish, and a bit expensive.

Muumuus and patio dresses for me!

Adaptive clothing can be pricey. Some stores have a small selection of women's clothing that is "cut" to look flattering while seated in a PWC.

Yoga pants worked for awhile for me ( satiny undies make pulling slacks up a lot easier)

These days if I wear a pad or depends ( I like Silloutes) I have to have assistance pulling up and down, just can't balance well enough, long enough to get the job done. I often park in front of the BR sink counter and lean against it while my CALS does the pull up. I feel safe because I know I can sit on the PWC if I lose my balance. (some days I can manage this on my own In this position if I'm wearing a skirt or have really loose fitting slacks.

A Neuro nurse who has ALS has a website that includes tips and directions for remodeling your slacks. Look for ALS from both sides dot org.

We're remodeling some skirts to have a slit in the back that starts at the buttocks.

Larger size shirts needed to accommodate my budda belly are way too large at the shoulder so I'm finding a few things in the maternity section. They tend to be longer and wider at the bottom.

Please keep the ideas coming.

I meant yoga pants not yaga! Sheesh!

Moderated! We knew what you meant Pie!

I have figured out the bra challenge. I fasten the bra and then hook my arms through loops and pull. I am lucky that I have a swimmers build and not much in the way of hips. I have affected mostly in just the hands. Knit dresses keep me going through the day, but I find if I make my hands into fists I can pull my pants up that way. Certainly none of this is going to get any easier for any of us.

If the have someone put clothespins on both ends of a strong string you can have them attached to your pants before you lower them, and then help you pull them up. (My SIL is an Occupational Therapist and she did this for my stepDad)

Helen, what a good tip!

Great discussion. I wear long knit summer dresses. They are in style right now. I wear camis with built in bras. They are easy for my husband to put on me. When I am cold I wear leggings that just slip on my legs and nice shawls that are easy to throw over my shoulders. I have been a lttle worried about being warm enough in the fall so I hve been lookingfor alternatives.
