My wife is able to stand with assistance long enough for me to prepare her for the commode and to replace her clothing afterwards. We are wondering how to best accomplish these efforts once she is not able to stand without assistance.

A sad welcome, Midland. The methods you use will have to change as her disease progresses. Once she can't stand, there may be some things like putting on pants that are easier when she is lying in bed or reclined in a lift chair, other like tops when she is sitting up in bed or a wheelchair, etc. Pull-on pants with elastic waists, like sweatpants, are usually easiest, along with shirts that button or have full zippers or Velcro. For outerwear, throws, blankets and ponchos may come into play.

When you begin transferring her using a Hoyer lift, depending on her weight and your strength, you may be able to replace pants by threading the sling legs through. There are also adaptive pants with flaps for toileting, or some people sew their own.

Google "adaptive clothing" and you will see examples.

Best,
Laurie
