Thelma I'm at that slow part in the book just now...it's kind of depressing as well. I looked for The Outlanders at the library last night and they have all the books in the series except the very first book! argh! I'm going to our cabin in the mountains this weekend and was looking for a good read..we're in a "dead zone" and it's wonderful..no cells, computers, or even tv. My poor dd goes through withdrawal...

Funny...I heard about the Outlander series from a friend who described it as having some of the best sex scenes! You got to love that Jamie

My favorite book lately: World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War by Max Brooks, absolutely fascinating treatment of what might seem like a silly topic. It is not a fast read for me, but I have read it twice and have even listed to the audio version. I have not met one person who has read it! Anyone?

Default Pam

I just finished the book last night and I have nothing better to say about it than I did the last time. It just didn't do it for me. There is something about the prose that I found formulaic and movie-of-the-week-ish if that makes any sense... and yes there is a sluggish pace to the story.

Next I am reading the "The Brief Wonderous Life of Oscar Wao" by Junot Diaz and I have heard nothing but rave reviews so I'm excited!

Default Thelma and friends,

Yeah, I don't know what it is about me sometimes. I cannot leave a book unread once I start, even if it's just so-so! I think there was one book that was so crappy that I not only didn't read it, I threw it out. Otherwise, I hang in there! Wasn't this book turned into a movie?

Are you still using books, or are you all reading online? Andy's Eye Response computer came with a Microsoft "reader" with free access to lots of books through their website. Although he was never much of a reader, no matter how much I tried to entice him. I just love getting lost in the characters and setting. I tend to lean towards historical fiction, I think, but just about anything that will catch my attention works.

My daughter is 12, and so I've read several books with her, like the Potter series (excellent) and also James Patterson has some teen fiction books, soon to be in the movies, called Maximum Ride. Science fiction, but fun for sure! I tend to opt for light reads, as opposed to more....thought provoking. I suppose I'm still in escapist mode.

Wow, I'm chatty tonight! Love to all!

Pam et All ,

I have escaped into books for many years.
I have a set of favorites that are usually read every year or two.

Calming the mind is the next best thing to sleep. It doesn't have to make sense, as long as it is entertaining.

Has anyone found they have trouble reading since being diagnosed ? I seem to have a 20 page limit lately before the letters start dancing.

Glen

Pam, Have you tried reading an Christmas themed books. I think I read them for about 6 months after Wes died. Really hopeful and uplifting.

Glen, my concentration when reading seems to have evaporated too. Crossword doesn't seem affected, or reading the newspaper, but I just can't get into reading a book, and it takes me forever to finish one, which is just very unlike me. I keep waiting for this to pass, because it seems a perfect time to read more, not less.

PS,

I just pre-ordered Stardust by Joseph Kanon (who wrote The Good German)

Its a thriller set in 1945 Hollywood. ...I have a Barnes & Noble mastercard, and earn reward points with it that pay out in the form of B&N gift cards.... so, I look at it as getting "free books" although they're hardly that.

Rose and Glen,I used to read a couple of books a week, not any more I have been reading the one I have now and it is half way through and I really can't tell you what it is about. I have all the time in the world now but can't focus. Maybe it will pass as winter comes on

Default Rosella,

I finally finished 'Memory Keepers' and thought it did speed up there at the end. I agree with your assessment...3 stars.

I just finished making my new book list, thanks to all the suggestions on here! I hope the library has some of these titles. Thanks so much, everyone!

Has anyone read On the Road by Jack Kerouac? Oddly, this title has come up in conversation several times in past weeks. Even my one son was asking my other one if he'd read it.... I hated to admit I'd missed it, always knew of it, but never got around to it. Guess I have to now, can't have my boys be more "hip" than me LOL.

Default On The Road

I've read it! It's amazing. You will love it... very evocative of its time.

The apartment I lived in in New York's East Village was directly behind the tenement building that Jack Kerouac once lived in. The actual building he lived in is gone now. It was destroyed in a fire but it was still a very fascinating piece of trivia for me!
