The specialist in Lexington, KY my mom sees doesnt seem to be much of a support. The nurses or doctor will not call her back about symptoms and she doesn't want to continue to see him. The drive is a 1 1/2 hours and the last time he told her he was going to talk to another doctor and get back to her (he never did). She has called and they do not return her calls. Why can't he just spell it out for us? She even missed her last appointment because she feels he doesn't care that much. Has anyone had any similar problems?

Angela,

What you describe is abysmal. I have not heard of anyone being treated so badly by doctors (but not unusual for insurance companies). Are you certain your Mom actually called? Have you tried calling to sweet talk the gatekeeper? If so, can you get a referral elsewhere? Maybe her PCP can stickhandle the situation and get things moving? I recall that your Mom was not actually diagnosed. Is that still the case? I ask because, the sooner she has a firm diagnosis, the sooner she can apply for SSDi and get referred to an ALS clinic for on going care, support and information.

Must have said something naughty... Mod land! Stay tuned Angela.

As she's progressing so fast, perhaps they can help? PLS is supposed to be slow. She needs to prevent falls. If she's falling she at the least needs a rolling walker--if not a wheelchair. The rolling walkers are nice as they have the seats.

They also make a walker that turns into a transport chair. Hope she can get the help she needs. Your mom and I are the same age--it sucks to have your body going at such a young age.

I don't understand what that post is about and it is bugging me to see it on the home page. So there....

I hope you found a new dr for her. That is a shame and maybe you should report it. I wish you peace.
