I told my story here before, about my twitching and a huge number of symptoms that i had and i have. One of the worst symptoms is the brutal horrible pain in my TONGUE for more than 1 year. Today i thought that is time to end this pain and go to visit a neurologist. The first think they ask me is about my insurance, i told them i have no insurance. Then they told me i will have to pay $100 bucks. Yes, $100. I dont have that money, i dont have a job, iam 23 years old male, i am just a student. The thing is, that i know that the neurologist wont be able to heal me, neurology is the most useless specialty in medicine, you can hear that from a lot of med students and other medics. I wanted to visit this neuro only for a prescription for my tongue pain and he need $100 for that? F*** you.

Every neurological disease have no cure and they want u to pay at least $100 them to get just a diagnosis of a no curable disease?

I tell u this to every one out there looking for diagnosis: dont waste your time and money with those idiots anymore. If u think u have a neurological disease they cant do anything for you.

I very disappointed, all my life i thought medics are good and very kind people, today i know the truth. A bunch of greedy bastards.

i cant edit my message, too many typos i know, my main language is not English but i hope u can understand my post

Randy I feel your anger.
Your post is less about the money, and more about fear.

We're all scared, and given a different approach, I'll bet you'll find a lot of caring people on this post that will be willing to give you some honest advice.

You don't know if you have a neurological disease, that's why you pay the $100.00 to get an expert opinion.

Neurologist happen to be some of the smartest Drs in the world, don't bag on them because they happened to use their brains in this field instead of another.

Hang in there, I hope you get the answers you're looking for.

Casey

Yeah those damn Dr's, what are they doing trying to make a living? How much do you think Medical school and sub specialties studies cost. I am sorry about your issues and what you are dealing with, but being angry at the Dr for you not having funds to pay for his or her service is just insane and an example of the problematic issues facing young people in society today. Go to the ER and ask for treatment they will not turn you away. however a 23 year old that doesn't have a $100.00 for something that is so important for over a year is telling. Wouldn't it be nice if we couldn't have a disease like ALS because we couldn't afford it. Sorry I blew up.

Wow only $100. That's a bargain.
It's rubbish that they don't cure disesases, they cure plenty and help control others. It's a difficult specialty for sure, that's why it attracts the detectives and deep thinkers. Shame on them for wanting to help people with difficult problems.
If it's only pain relief you want, you don't need a specialist anyway.
Not to mention that with your attitude they probably would prefer you not to walk through their doors.
Oh and if my 23 year old daughter was acting like a spoilt brat, I would be very disappointed in her.

If it's sympathy you want, unfortunately you have come to the wrong place. We all keep a neurologist on our payroll, whether we like it or not. I would bet most of us have spent 100 times your $100.00 to get the answer we didn't want to get.

If you have been dealing with this for a year, try dealing with it a little bit longer and each month save $10.00 and by Christmas you will be able to go. But here's a good question; why a Neurologist and not an ENT or Dentist first?

Just a thought!

Well, let's see. I have no insurance either. Paid cash for everythin you'll see listed here. The first dr I saw charged me $65 to tell me I needed to see an orthopedist, spent about 5 min with me. The orthopedist charged me $117 to tell me "this isn't carpal tunnel. it's something much more serious. you need a complete neurological workup" Spent about 15 min with me because I got so upset - burst into tears. The first neuro appt was $480 cash for about 20 min of his time. The first EMG was $500; the 2nd was $500; the 3rd was $650. The 2nd neuro visit was $411 including the EMG which took about 45 min. Referred me to the ALS clinic.

So, kiddo, I think you can come up with the $100 if it's really important to you. As the saying goes, "show me your checkbook and I'll show you where your priorities are."

It cost me $1000 for my diagnosis with insurance. 100 is a bargain

Which is why I'm glad I live in a state that has insurance available through the state.... I pay for it, called Commonwealth Care, and pick my plan... This is the plan that the Obama plan is largely based on, and though I have some issues with the way it's run, it's a life saver for so many of us. I am in the process of applying for the state disability insurance as it has better coverage according to my social worker.

Good luck, having no insurance sucks, but you cannot expect to walk into a doc's office and get free care. There should be clinics available though, why not check one of them out? Or contact an agency like Salvation Army for a referral if your area lacks social services.

wow, my last mri (ordered by my neurologist) was 8963.00 for 45 minutes (thats $10,000.00 an hr) my part, $1100.00 I feel your pain...want free health care move to canada ,if you can wait...

Lots of "greedy" doctors spend their days dealing with "cheapskate" patients. You know, the kind who have a problem for a year, finally decide to see a doctor about it, and demand instant diagnosis at a cheap cost (fitting into a college student's budget).

My fiance pays almost $300 a month to breathe. Shut your mouth and quit complaining.

JoB49 - if you have insurance, it costs more for medical care. As a cash-pay, I always get a reduced rate. My previous employer started providing insurance about 3 yrs ago and the only time I used it, it cost me $15 more to see the dr than if I had paid cash that day. (co-pay) I was told by their business office that if they have to file insurance, they charge $149 for the office visit. My cash pay was $65. Ended up paying $80 with the insurance. After that, even though I had insurance, I paid cash.

When I had the first EMG, I negotiatyed the price with the dr office. It was about 25% of what they normally charged.
