Default I can, I can, I can

I wrote this a few days after I was diagnosed. I used to write poetry when I got upset, but gave it up years ago. It may be corny, but it's the best way to describe how I feel.

I used to walk, in fact I ran
I got things done
I always said, "I can!"

I can, I can, I can

I worked full-time and went to school
All the while I raised my children
And felt there was nothing I could not do

I can, I can, I can

"Super Mom" was my nickname
I loved to sew, cook and clean
I was happy and never did seek out fame

I can, I can, I can

Then one day I started to limp
I felt pain in my legs
I found I would slip

I can, I can, I can

Stress and a pinched nerve doctors diagnosed me
But I continued to get worse and when I nearly fell into our pond,
I said enough is enough I needed to know what was wrong

I can, I can, I can

Then when I could hardly walk and my right hand was weak
I saw a doctor who did not make me feel like a freak

I can, I can, I can

He sent me to UCSF Medical Center three hours away
After two visits, MRI's, EMG's and blood tests
I was taken seriously and that made my day

I can, I can, I can

ALS or Lou Gehrig's disease was what I was told
A punch in my stomach
No one could console

I can, I can, I can

This poem is incomplete and it will be sad
But my journey with this illness has just begun
And I have a lot I must add

I can, I can, I can until I cannot

Im so sorry about your diagnosis. I luv your unfinished poem. It touched me because i was recently diagnosed with ALS and my symptoms began with a limp as well but almost a year before i was diagnosed.

I started with a limp, then unable to climb steps, to using a rollator walker to walk & now i use an electric wheelchair to get around.

I pray your progression is slow
Thanks for sharing.

Love this! Did you make this yourself, or find it somewhere? If you found it somewhere, that's really something because I totally made it up in my poem and never saw this.

Hugs,
Deb

Your poem hit a nerve with me. I make these, I don't even know what to call them, 'messages' when I feel compelled to express a feeling or thought of some sort, often ALS related. I've done several different ones. Not always published (social media) because some of them make their point a bit to strongly. I see others all the time on FB, mostly spiritually oriented. I don't know who creates them, but I they usually get their point across. What is it they say... "A picture is worth a thousand words!!" However, I thought your words were very heartfelt.

Glad you enjoyed it. Have a sparkling day!
