Can you use a normal queen bed sized frame with a fold-up format bed?
We want to save our furniture, but have a hospital type mattress and mechanism.

No.
The motor for a hospital bed (or any adjustable bed) is part of the frame and activating the motor folds the frame, which in turn folds the mattress. What you can mix and match are the mattress and parts to hang on the frame, like railings, headboard, footboard if/as desired.
Perhaps place your present bed in storage, or lend to someone for the time being?
