For what it's worth... many may already know.

When you have a diagnosis of ALS you are automatically considered 100%
disabled with Social Security.

If you own a home in many states you are eligible to a tax reduction.

Go to your tax office with your SS Award Letter and apply.

Here in NC they reduce your tax value by $25,000.00 dollars. It will help
lower your mortgage payment if it is in escrow.

I believe in some states, in some circumstances, your tax value might
be completely exempt. Call your tax office if you haven't.

(Possibly, in some states, it may include the spouse left with the home too.)

Correction...

Ooops... made a mistake.

Correction... my tax relief is with my county. Not state.

Geeze...

PS. Thanks for merging this. My edit time ran out.

In Volusia County, FL, when you are confined to a wheelchair with limited arm use, you are fully exempt from property taxes.

I think wheelchair with arm use only gives a $500 exemption. I'll have to check it.

So the key is getting the social security office designation? I havent done anything with social security yet. Trying to continue working for a few more months in order to get full retirement.

Blitz, you should not need to take a reduced pension. Since you have ALS, you are considered 100% disabled and can draw SSDI. This will not reduce your SS on account of early retirement and you will be automatically switched to SS when you reach full retirement age.

I am a teacher with no social security eligibility having paid into state of Ohio teacher retirement for 32 years.
