I think we get them fairly frequently. When you see a comment by a new member that seems slightly odd that is likely the cause. Sometimes we are not sure and leave them to see what happens. In the meantime don't waste your energy on them!

I've read that chatbots can befriend people, then scam them out of their credit cards.

The conversation you have with a chatbot can be stored and mined. After that, they can be dangerous to your reputation.

I was going to ask why chatbots do what they do. My imagination was not really up to the task. AI's learning to be human? Russian hackers trying to learn English? Charitable computer programs developed for lonely people?

Nope- data mining and phishing. sigh

Chatbots started out as helpers in chat rooms.
They got pervterted as the web 'matured'.

Supposedly, chatbots are the "revolution" we've all been waiting for. They're easy to program, and can be deployed for different purposes. They are hoped to be used for lots of good reasons.

Of course, as soon as anything new is developed, millions of people are looking at it, thinking How can I use this to get laid and/or make money?
