I posted back in Nov. 2012 and at that to e we did not have a formal diagnosis, however we did receive a second opinion in Dec. 2013 and confirmed ALS. Mom has been doing ok, her weight has dropped, her eating has become a challenge, she cannot have liquids. Physically she remains strong, we can see her tiredness though. Our newest challenge she has developed a cold, the common cold has taken her out and I don't know what to do. She does not have the ability to cough , we do have the cough assist and it helps. Her breathing is difficult just from the disease but now it is worse. I have talked with her PCP and neurologist. I guess I am looking for suggestions tips anything. I am just scared!

Hi,

If you already have the Cough Assist machine, you can try a Vaporizer, also try Robitussin or Mucinex to thin the mucus and, finally you may wanna try to hit her gently but repeatedly in the back to loosen the mucus. Also try the air stacking exercises.

Hope this helps.
