Hi Everyone,
My dad is in the hospital right now because he cannot urinate on his own. They put a catheter in and there was blood. He had this problem one other time back in Sept. right before he was leaving for the hospital to get his PEG. We wrote it off to stress. He is currently not in a hospital that has any type of specialization with ALS, and the doctors there are saying that him not being able to urinate is ALS related. That doesnt make any sense to me what so ever. Seems that with ALS you would eventually lose your ability to hold the urine, not the other way around. They finally put him on some antibiotics today just in case it is a bladder infection. He does have some bowel impaction so they are giving him enemas etc... and if the impaction is not causing him to not urinate they are saying that they will send him home from the hospital tomorrow to have a catheter in for the rest of his life. I just have never heard of this problem before being related to ALS. Anyone else out there had this problem - of not being able to go?
Thanks to anyone in advance!
Hugs, Kari

Ya beat me to it CJ!

I am very sorry he is experiencing those problems. I hope it can be relieved very soon.

Dear Kari, So sorry to hear that there is even more stress in you life! sending((((hugs)))))

My husband has had problems in the opposite direction. He can barely hold it in, and he has to go all of the time. He is having to really push to make sure he has finished, too.

I thought ALS generally did not affect bladder and bowel. Did I read the wrong information?

Could be a kidney stone Kari. They can usually pick it up with ultrasound. Not being able to drink enough i.e. dehydration can be a factor in getting kidney stones. You often have trouble peeing and have blood in the urine and then infection with stones. Take care and I'm sorry that your dad is having this trouble.

kari it is a renal problem ,probably an infection.
my son has kidney function impairment, the filter units in the kidneys get inflamed and dont work properly.
this results in an inability to go to toilet and blood in urine.
my son has gone 30+ hrs unable to go to toilet resulting in trips to hospital, during good periods he only goes twice a day despite how much he drinks.

tell them you want a urologist to take a look at him and you want his bladder and kidneys checked for any infection.
bladder infections can be very nasty in elderly or terminally ill patients so it needs prompt attention and treating asap.

Oh thank you so much everyone! I personally didnt think it was ALS related either. I am home with a horrible flu and havent been able to get to my dad, but I was so happy to be able to call him and tell him what everyone said here. He seems to be feeling better today, and I think its because the antibiotics are kicking in. He has a standing order that he doesnt want any antibiotics because of the ALS, and I told my mom to tell him that would be stupid to have such a strong man die of something so simple as a bladder infection! DERKA! So, I am just glad he agreed and things are getting better. Today he also had a new doctor come in who's father in law has ALS and she was all over my dad. She called the VA and told them to not wait until the end of the month to get the power wheelchair to him (they wanted to wait to give my mom another lesson on how to work it....long exhausting story) This doctor is on the ball, and I am so thankful. My parents keep saying things like "Why did God give your dad ALS?!" and I keep telling them, its not God who did that, it was the effect of "free will" in the world, and how God is there to help you with the blessings along the way..... to get through it all.... right JOEL?
Love ya ALL,
Kari

You are correct. Sorry about your flu, there are too many with it this year and it is nasty. I hope you can recover quickly. I am so glad your dad changed his mind and is starting to improve. Thank heavens for the new doctor!

I love you Joel!
