i!d be facinated if anyone could give me the run down on this neurological test this neuro surgeon who specialised on the pituitary gland.....not that the gland had any reference to the test.......am getting long winded here..........here we go................................this neuro had a couple of students with him and he was showing off a bit...he took me to the wash hand basin, asked me to shut my eyes, cup my hands together and go through the motions of bending over and scupping the water up to wash my face....wereby i then cracked my head onthe tap...except i did"nt hit the tap cos he had his hand on it....to stop me hurting myself obviously.......i asked him why i hit the tap, he replied..."because you dont
know were your legs are"......well i do know were my legs, at theend of my bum...so, any clues about what that was all about?..........cheers folks...johnnypuzzled.

Hmmm- I'm interested to hear what our more clinically knowledgeable folks say...

Is it a depth perception thing? How tall was the basin? Can you feel your legs? Don't where I'm going with this - somebody who knows please answer so that we'll all know.

Sounds pretty weird to me, I mean I would have cracked my head on the tap even pre ALS.

People with nerve problems in their lower body often have trouble maintaining balance in a standing position when they close their eyes. They will begin to sway because the information that the brain is receiving from the nerves in the legs doesn't give a true picture of the position of the legs, relative to the rest of the body.

The doctor put his hand in front of you , johnny, because he knew you would sway forward when you bent forward at the waist. A mildly sadistic little trick that made a memorable impression on his student audience, I'm sure.

Hi Johnny
just read your post you crack me up?
if i bend over to fasten shoes etc I can lose my balance sometimes forward I tipped Forward in front of the nurse at the neuro clinic she told the neuro she seemed to think it was sygnificant but I told her I had done that for 20 years I am told most people with balance problems
fall back dont know how true that is ?
Spain well deserved to win
take care all

hi johnny.:)
i have heard of this before and tried it myself, only to loose my balance.........i think its something called kenisis.
like tfogey said its to check balance, like when they tell you to stand with your feet together and close your eyes...............this is the rhomberg sign.

heres some info for you.

To achieve balance, a person requires 2 out of the following 3 inputs to the cortex.
Romberg's test - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

just saw your post scouse.
so glad spain won too.

thanks for the input gang..very much appreciated.....now , my conclusion so far is!...if you dont know where your legs are then you would"nt know that you did"nt know where your legs were.........that make sense?....trfogey is pretty close i reckon..but we need the great mans input here.............were is he?....ta, very much again, my friendly friends.....johnnywobble...

luvmn..can i feel my legs? you asked....i say yes, but maybe not.........i dont know....the neuro said i did"nt ...but that was with me eyes shut.......with me eyes open i feel "em......and me eyes shut i feel "em....something else is going on.................a good question all the same...luvmn.........weres the answere coming from...johnnylegless.....

Oh Johnnylegless...I tried the experiment and lost my balance a little bit. Is this a bad sign?

love...try this one...it what this neoro asked me to do prior to the basin test...........stand up straight legs and back tight to a wall...than bend forward at the waist..keep going until something odd happens..let me know how you do ,cheers luvnmm.......johnny

johnny.
its not a sensory thing that you can not feel your legs,of course you can as pls does not cause sensory issues like that..........that is why ncv tests are ok.
it is sensory in that the pathways in the grey matter of the cerebral cortex and cerebellum are damaged so signals can not get through.
heres another wiki info lesson.
Grey matter - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hey Johnny!

I tried up to the wall thing. I started bending at the waist and got a couple of inches away and started clenching my toes to stay balanced and then about another inch or so and I fell forward. That's what I'm supposed to do, right?

Love you,
Linda

yep, linda....i stuck through the test..my whole trunk bounced up and down and i lost control before i was caught by the neuro.......weird........johnny.....

so olly..i can feel were my legs are cos both sensury and motor signals go through the cns...ie. brain and spine..............and, in pls it is the motor signals only effected via the grey matter....if i could"nt feel my legs..numbness..it would be sensory which would exclued mnd..yep?...given i can feel my legs its motor related......yep?..so why dont i know were my legs are when my eyes are shut? or do i not know when eyes open.......i know what i do know and what i know is am thick as the proverbial plank.....confused! i sure is...dont give up on me though, am a battler.............................johnnywatdayisit......
