My wife started mild speech problem about 1 yr ago--it has now progressed to significant slurred speech and has swallowing difficulty and other issues. She has seen a neurologist and several ENTs that did nothing other than send to speech therapy. In surfing the internet for slurred speech i found bulbar palsy----sounds like that is what she has-- can anyone recommend a doctor to confirm diagnosis in either St Louis in Indianapolis area. How is diagnosis made? Thanks for any help.

I see a dr at Washington university Barnes Jewish Hospital in St. Louis. They are the only ones who found out what was wrong with me after 5 years. Good luck.

thanks-- do you see a neurologists?

Yes, he is a neuromuscular specialist. I was bounced around for 5 years and finally sent to see him and he found out what was wrong in 5 months.

I can't believe they didn't order tests for your wife. That's awful :(

Good luck as you move forward.

I have her set up to see a "real neurologists"--thanks for your comment.

went to barnes hospital in feb/2010 diagnosed me that day. my sympthoms were positive in apr/2009 but didn't go to pcp until sep neuro 1 dec/2009 said I suspect als , neuro 2 jan/2010 sent me to barnes, neuro 3 said sorry you have als. I think its important you go to als clinic where neuro,s deal with this every day

Indiana University helped with the AFTD conference in Indianapolis a couple years ago - I know they had some researchers, etc there. I would try to contact AFTD and see if they can direct you to a neuro there.

thank---any help is appreciated.

is there an ALS support group office in cape. there is on in st Louis, they can set up appointment at barnes. up is 55 and you are there. success

good suggestion--I will see.

The nearest ALS support group is a great idea. I would look for neurologist at a teaching hospital.
