Interesting information, Marjorie ... I have never heard that you should not drive if you can't speak clearly, but I'm sure all states are different.

Best to follow tdamess's advice and check with your insurance company if you think your state might have that same law.

Perhaps New York has different laws. It is a matter of whether the insurance company will insure you with an ALS dx in our state. We had to get a letter from a physician stating it was still OK for my husband to drive. I know some states require driving tests to determine if you may keep your license. Our insurance company would have required my husband take a test if he could not get a letter from the physician.

I would rather my husband be treated as a person with ALS (a lot of cops happen to be aware of the disease by the way), than a drunk taken off to jail. The stress of that would be unbearable!

I worked with a woman with grand mal epilepsy, which was under control with medications, and she was given permission to drive by the state as long as she took her meds. It was noted on her license, just as mine says I must wear glasses. Many disabled people have modifications to the controls in their cars that allow them to drive safely and legally.

I agree with CJ ... for me, it's better to communicate with cops than try to hide your condition from them, especially with bulbar symptoms, which cannot be hidden!
