Default Peg tomorrow

My husband is getting his peg tomorrow. He is getting it early so we can keep his weight up. He is a little nervous, and a little depressed, as doing this makes it really real. A lot of things to accept in just 2 months since DX.

Hoping for the best with your husband's procedure. The earlier the better. I know it is tough to go there, but it is the way to keep ahead of the disease and to be proactive. Let us know how it goes, sending a big hug your way.

Sadiemae .... good luck to your husband with the procedure. Yes, it does make it "real," doesn't it? But he's so smart to get it done early, so he can maintain, instead of having to fight to regain.

I think you'll both be glad you stayed a step ahead.

He is very wise to make this decision early. As hard as it is try to keep positive, while this makes it real it also will give him the strength to live life to the fullest!

he is experiencing a lot of pain. they told him he could eat normally after and he did and the pain was almost unbearable. He had liqiud food from his dinner leaking, and i almost did the 911 call, but doctor called and said he just ate to much(by mouth) and too soon. We have a full day of appts at VA hospital tomorrow, so we will get it figured out. Les has a high tolerance of pain, and almost couldnt take the pain. really scared me. Its been 4 hours since he ate and is just now able to lay down in the bed. I am a good cook too. Had his faves: meatloaf, mashed potatos, gravy and milkshakes. My husband is 5 ft 9 in and 190 lbs, and can still eat pretty well. This was a horrible procedure for him, but tomorrow is another day and it will be brighter. His surgery was at 2pm, we left the hospital at 5pm, and they gave him no pain meds. I am scared to even try to feed him through the PEG, but will get answers tomorrow on why all the pain. He is now resting comfortably, hopefully I can too!!

My husband had lots of pain too. They wanted him to use the peg right away and they put water in it while he was in recovery and then started him on feeds soon after. At that time he could still eat by mouth but they wanted to ensure that everything was working ok. The actualy peg tube was ok and we had the same problem with eating too much regular food and doing feeds too close together. He wanted to gain weight so badly he would insist on both a regular meal and his tube feed trying to calorie load. I don't recommend it!
Tony had bad pain for about a week. Kept me up most nights and he did have lots of pain killers and he never asked for meds at that time at all. It did get better Thank goodness

I was proactive with the pain meds as I could tell he wasn't doing well and I called his family dr to put in an order for pain meds to be ready for me to pick up once he got home. They weren't going to send him home with anything either..
It will get better...

les is doing better, went to VA today for first visit since he got service connected, and was amazed at the treatment we got. He got pain meds, put on antibiotics just in case, and they did an xray of his tummy to make sure everything was done right. His lungs are fine, he ate a bit tonite, and is taking water in peg. This morning he said he never wanted to eat again, but with all the great people on our team in reno, he feels better, not happy yet, but better. Thanks for all your concerns, I am sure i will look to all of you for future help on our journey.

Sadiemae, I am glad things are getting better for you both. I was bumped for an emergency for my peg a couple of weeks ago, since that time the team has had a run of the flu so all pegs have been on hold, they told me at clinic yesterday I am still top of the list. Thank you for your input, I can still eat and it is good for me to know not to eat too much. All the best to you both.

I think what did it for him was my "famous" halloween candy milkshakes, which he drank 2 20 ouncers with his meal. Also insist on a home health care visit scheduled in advance of your surgery. have them set it up so they come right after your surgery. ours didnt schedule in advance, and we had other stuff scheduled when they wanted to come out, and we have 2 wait till Sat for them to come out. Also make you sure you sit upright after eating for at least 30 min, preferably an hour after eating. Live and learn, so we can live better!!!
