Jim had a routine physical today, (since he missed one last year- too busy getting diagnosed with ALS!); he's in great shape! Except of course for the ALS!
The topic of vaccinations was discussed- which to get, etc.- he got the pneumonia vaccine today, we will both get the flu-shot latter this fall, we will hold off on the H1N1 vaccine (our doc's recommendation- thinks it is premature at this time; I agreed- it's a personal choice). But, here is one I haven't seen discussed before- Adacel.
Anyone familiar with this or had it or had discussions about it?
It is the DTP vaccine (diphtheria, tetanus, & pertussis- whooping cough vaccine). Here's what he said: they use to use live bacteria in these shots, but 5-6 yrs ago changed to "dead" bacteria. It is not as long-lasting, so kids need a booster shot beginning of
teen yrs. For whatever reasons (some don't get booster, etc.) whooping cough is around more now. He himself had it last yr (it is called the 100 day cough!), usually get it from being around kids.
He really doesn't need the diphtheria; is overdue for a tetanus, but we aren't worried about that- (he isn't going hiking & be likely to step on a rusty nail!), but this is the only way the pertussis vaccine is available for adults. He really thinks this is valuable to get.
I will discuss it with our neuro (but not until the next clinic, since it is not urgent); but wanted to hear if anyone else had this suggested to them.
Thanks for any feedback!
