Ronelle, I am very sorry to read about your hospital episode. It really goes to show how different we all are and how our experiences can vary so much. While some get their PEG tubes under a local and are done in a couple of hours others end up with lengthy hospital stays and other complications.
My neuro (head of the University of Alberta
ALS clinic) believes that many PALS do not react well to the sedatives that are usually used for PEG placement. That was certainly my case because while my pulmonary tests were very good my breathing was not good the first time that they tried my PEG placement with sedatives. They were so worried that they reversed me and tried again the next day with a general anesthetic and an anesthesiology team present. Much, much better. I had no pain or infection problems so I am sorry that you are having to go through this. Take care and get better soon.
