Hi everyone. I am new on this site. See my mother has ALS.She has 7 kids. (5 daughter and 2 sons) We have never been around or even known any one that had ALS. We realy dont know when it started. But we do know 2 years ago in Sept. Iwas diagnosed with breast cancer. Mom was with me all the way. That is when we started to notice her speech slipping some. We just choped it up to stress. It Just was getting worst. so we sat down with her and talk to her about this. She agreed to go to the Doctor. They said she had a stroke. So we was treating her for that. But her speech was dont getting any better. Then we notice she could not swallow right. So we had that test done. Well we chocked on that. She did not get to finsh that. To make a long story short. Test after test. We had a answer, ALS. Her tongue don't move real well. It is getting very hard to understand her. She is choking alot. she can't eat or even take her med. with out choking. She hads alot of mucus. Its so sad to watch her. She put her had between her legs just to try to get it up to where we can get it for her. Her left arm is getting where she can't move it at all. ( she is a left handed person. So her writing is not any good) Her right arm is not any better. Her head is starting to drop to the left. She is so not good on her legs at all. She has no strength at all. So here is where I need your help? What can we do for her to make it easy for her? What is going to happen next so we can be ready for? We are all scared, we would love to make this easy on her.(as much as we can) Give has any thing you can. Please I hope I explained this right to you all. ( sorry if any thing is spelled wrong ,nervous here

Hi there. I'm very sorry about your mom. Has anyone in the family contacted the ALS Association? They or the Muscular Dystrophy Assoc. can help with advice, support and equipment from their loan pool. www.alsa.org is where to start. Go to the In your Community section and put in your zip code to find help near you.

I'm very sorry that your mom has been diagnosed with ALS.

I assume she was seen by an ALS specialist at an ALS Clinic. If so, there would be a social worker and various professionals that deal with helping people with ALS. If she hasn't been to an ALS Clinic, it would be advisable to do so, just because of the support and knowledge they can provide to help your mom all in one place.

It seems the ALS Assoc. has no chapter in your area, they would also be of some help. Ok. Al was replying as I type this. Go with his advice.

Thank you

Thank you for your help. I am going to that site.(www.ALSA.org) I will see if that will help us in any way. I have already learned alot from this site.

Hi,

I checked the list on the ALS website. It said "If there is not a chapter in your area, information and referral services are also provided through The ALS Association's National Office.

Information and Referral Service toll-free number:
(800) 782-4747

I also found a clinic listed below:

West Virginia

West Virginia University, School of Medicine
Department of Neurology
1 Stadium Drive, 3rd Floor Eye Institute
