I don't know if anyone has posted about this, but I'll post this in case they haven't.

In the current (November 10) issue of Newsweek, the feature "My Turn" is a first-person account by a PALS who was recently diagnosed with ALS and is trying to do something (fundraising) about it. It's on page 22, titled "Batting for the Cure."

Aside from being an interesting story, and giving ALS some more national attention (that's two articles about ALS in this one issue of Newsweek), this writer attended a fantasy baseball camp and talked to some major leaguers there about what major league baseball could do to promote awareness and increase funding for ALS research.

Next July 4 will be the 70th anniversary of Lou Gehrig's speech in Yankee Stadium when LG retired from baseball. The writer is proposing that July 4, 2009 be made "ALS-Lou Gehrig Day," with every major and minor league team showing films of Lou Gehrig's retirement speech on their scoreboards, and asking fans to contribute.

The article is at: http://www.newsweek.com/id/166832

Great article. I'll post this message in on the new ALS Matters forum, too.

Beth hopefully baseball will listen.
