I am a caregiver to my longtime boyfriend. He was diagnosed January 2017 with ALS. The disease has been very aggressive and he is now on a vent. He is in rehab and we are working on getting him home (not easy). I'm wondering about life expectancy???

Life expectancy is as variable with a vent as without. My husband has been on a vent 7 years and counting as of Aug. There is someone o a FB group whose husband has been on 18 years and counting. Diane H on here I believe is over 15 years. Then there are some who only get months. Like everything else with this disease, it all depends and everyone's path is unique.

Hugs,

Sue

Sue from what I see is right on with the extreme variability. We met a woman who has been on a ventilator for 21 years. Some make it only a few months. Some Doctors say “ the average” is a year and half or something, but I doubt there is really a measurable average.
