I'm interested in hearing what supplements, if any, you've tried and how they may have helped? Or any that you avoid and why?

There are tons of things people try as you know. We can't begin to take them all.
Here is thread to get started
https://www.alsforums.com/forum/general-discussion-about-als-mnd/36385-supplements-2.html

If you do an advanced search for supplements ( choose title of thread only) there is lots of discussion

Also member Inventor has a wiki page of possible supplements by proposed action. He does not endorse just lists so you can research.

Whatever you choose please research side effects and interactions.

In addition to searching here, do a Google search on both "proletariat protocol " and" Deanna protocol "

Just a caution that keeping up with either of the "protocols" Greg mentioned is expensive and subject to a lot of unknown interactions (from canceling each other out to boosting levels of something). And everyone has health conditions apart from ALS, as well as other OTC and rx agents that you may take occasionally or frequently.

So starting with anyone else's prefab list makes a lot less sense to me than starting from a single agent, ensuring that it at least does not cause any ill effects subjectively, then moving on. drugs.com and the University of Maryland altmed database are good places to check before starting anything.

Some of the ones that were recommended to me were Ubiquinol (CoQ10), D3, N-Acetylcysteine and B12. These are the ones I have taken since I was first told I likely had MND.

According to the most recent discussion amongst various specialists in Canada (Canadian ALS Assoc. Webinar last week), N-Acetylcysteine will be recommended as a matter of course in Canadian clinics from now on.

The first thing I would do is get thorough blood work. Then I would address any deficiencies. Make sure your B-12 and D are tested, TSH, Ferritin (Iron), copper, Zinc & Ceruloplasmin.

After you've addressed any abnormal blood work, you can gather information on various supplements and decide which ones you need and which ones you want to try.

I take about 10 supplements for various reasons. Magnesium is a good one if you're having trouble with cramping/sleeping, etc.

When you decide which ones you want to try, introduce them one at a time to see how you feel and make sure they don't upset your stomach. Some supplements are contraindicated for various health reasons so you might want to work with your primary care doctor.
