So I wanted to post this because I've been hearing about and reading about detoxing as a way to slow progression.

On the site healingals.org there are a number of stories of PALS who claim to have reversed als. I don't know how many of those have a validated dx, although I do know that after reading the GM604 review on alsuntangled, Kim Cherry was verified to have a validated dx, and detoxification was part of his routine. Then there is Eric is Winning.

I also read a book about the Wahl's Protocol - a doctor who reversed progressive MS through diet, exercise, supplements, and yes.....she mentions detoxification as well. While it is MS, she talks a great deal about optimizing mitochondria functioning.

Speaking only as an amateur, it does make sense that clearing your body away from toxins would reduce the overall stress on cells. I've read and heard that Chelation therapy is NOT helpful....that there are better ways than others to detoxify.... drinking lots of water (if you can) and taking Milk Thistle are popular ways, as well as an organic diet.

Any thoughts? Is there any science/strong evidence that it does help?
Thx in advance.

oops Hyperbaric Oxygen review, not GM604

I do not think there is any scientific evidence. There are anecdotes as you have found. Even when there are verified diagnoses such as Kim Cherry's no one can truly say why any improvements happened. Dr Bedlack and colleagues did a paper ( posted here somewhere I think) on reversals and plateaus. In spite of what we have been told they do seem to happen. Since almost all of us try something it is not surprising that anyone who experiences an improvement credits what they tried as the cause. Without controlled studies we can't tell if it is so

Dr Wahl's book was recommended my sister's original neurologist- an MS specialist. While eating good quality food and organic is clearly not bad, the diet that can scientific controlled human study support is high calorie, high carb. If you can reconcile both no harm but for me the diet supported by research in ALS is the one I would focus on. You know too, I am sure, maintaining weight is important and there is also research that a bmi close to 31 correlates with increased survival

I read Kim's personal hx on his site, including the link here and the comment that we banned him for giving pts hope. It has enough misinformation about ALS that I would advise it not be taken seriously by any newcomers, e.g. when he talks about upper motor/lower motor/bulbar subtypes.

In terms of mito protection, I would be much more aligned w/ that concept, CoQ10 being one example, than the notion that ozone and herbs could regenerate nerves. As Nikki says, whole foods, organic, no harm except to your wallet, but ozone IVs 2-3/wk and buying a hyperbaric chamber? And there seem to be enough adherents to see if unprecedented cures could be documented.

I don't see the science, and I get very wary of placebo effects (where is the objective record of his deficits pre-treatment?) when I see rants against the Establishment, all "unnatural drugs," etc.

These comments are not solely directed in re Kim, but in re the detox paradigm generally.

Best,
Laurie

thanks for the responses. Too bad there isn't much science behind detoxing.... trying to find what works and what doesn't for this thing can at times drive a person mad (!) I suppose though, as long as the calories are there, it will not hurt.

So sadly I would say that if there was something out there that works, we wouldn't be here as every PALS would have done it!
