I am at the hospital emergency room worth Steve right now. He could not urinate and was in a great deal of pain. They tried there different sizes of catheters and still could not get it out. Said he has blood clots in his urine. Can you tell me what kind of blood clots cause the penitence or death worth ALS. I am sitting here terrified.

So sorry. Those are not the kind of blood clots that we were talking about in the cause of death thread. But miserable for him. Hope he is doing better now

sorry just learning how to put up a picture. Didn't mean to sabotage thread. Love ya!

Oh scared, how awful for you both.
I'm sure the doctors will have him comfortable soon.
God bless, Janelle x

As Nikki said, those aren't the type of blood clots we worry about. Miserable and need to be treated and cause found, but not imminently fatal!
The blood clots we worry about are ones that build up in our veins or sometimes in arteries. The most common are a clot in the calf of the leg. When we begin to lose the ability to walk and especially as we rely on a wheelchair, blood flow in the legs is slowed and clots can form. A wheelchair ought to come with a recommendation to take at least a baby aspirin daily, but doctors have a bad habit of not considering this. Only after you have a blood clot do they get around to doing anything about prevention! A blood clot can break apart and send pieces floating through the blood only to stick in arteries supplying the brain or lungs. In brain they can cause a stroke, and in the lungs they are called a pulmonary embolus. A pulmonary embolism causes shortness of breath and possibly pain when breathing, making them very frightening. At least they make you go to the ER promptly. A clot in the leg (DVT, Deep Vein Thrombosis) is too often considered just swelling or a strained muscle, not a reason to get to a doctor or ER promptly. That gives the clot time to send a shower of pieces off into the blood stream and cause a stroke or pulmonary embolism.
So, your husband isn't in danger from blood clots in the bladder or urine but I have managed to give you other things to worry about in the future. Sorry about that! But clots are something every here needs to know about so I have blatantly hijacked your post!

Hope he is doing better now. Sorry you both are going through this. Please let us know how he/you are.

Thank you, Diane, for the important info.

How are you doing, have they worked out what is going on and got some treatment started? I'm guess it is a UTI (urinary tract infection)?

We are behind you.

Scared, it could be a kidney stone. Sometimes when they are big, and getting passed, they cause a lot of blood. Several people here have had them. I hope that's all it is...my thoughts and prayers are with you. Steph

Thinking of you!

Thanks everyone for the kinds words and explaining the clots. They admitted him and we finally got to the room and fed him. We haven't slept but he now is pain free. Still blood in his urine and they are monitoring his heart. A urinary specialist should be here in a while and is going to do a bladder procedure and let us know if they are still planning on doing a blood transfusuon. He has been bleeding slowly for over 12 hours but they are saying it's clots in the bladder. They are hoping removing the clots will stop the bleeding so he can heal and that blood clots don't disintegrate something to do with his prostate. Don't really understand it all but his urinologist and I am very sleep deprived. Thanks for the prayers. I am sure they will work

Haha Steph. Thanks for cheering me up. Looks like I will be staying awake for a while so needed the laughs

Thanks for checking in. Hard as it is to be in the hospital sounds like the right place and they are doing what needs to be done. Make sure you eat and drink. Sleep may be in short supply for a while
