I did get the Va grant for a vehicle 20k which is amazing to me. I will probably go with a dodge grand caravan sxt. I will pay out of mt shallow pockets any thing over the 20k. Should be around 5k from pockets. My question is am I responsible to install PWC access. Which we all know is very expensive or
Does the va help with that...take care my friends
Patrick

Hi Pat,
No you are not responsible for the PWC access. The VA will _also_ pay for the entire conversion.
You should contact the PVA folks in your area, they are priceless! ;)

ditto that! Let us know if you have probs finding your advocate ...

Yep, VA pays for the whole conversion.

We used a dealer who specialized in converted vans, so we didn't have to wait for a conversion to be done, and we didn't have to figure out all the paperwork. In the end, we simply traded in our second car and got a $70k converted van in return.

After my wife passed, we easily sold the van right here on this board, and made a tidy profit (even though we sold it for half price). In that sense, it's kind of like a life insurance benefit because it pays the family after the PALS has passed.

Pat, I see from your other post that you are working with a mobility dealer. They should be intimately familiar with the process and the coverages.
My local Performance Mobility folks knew the whole shebang...

exactly! just like the $200k mtg life insurance -- tax free, too!

Patrick,

Just got my VA grant and Van a couple weeks ago. After you get the grant form back (21-4502), talk to your primary care VA doc and get a referral to the Miami VA Certified Driver Rehabilitation Specialist. The specialist is going to figure out what you'll need and writes it up almost like a prescription. My guy then took me out and taught me how to drive with hand controls and had me drive around until I was comfortable with them and ready to pass a State driver test. Get a copy of what he prepares and go to a place that sells handicap vans. They will work up an invoice and submit it to the VA. All the stuff that the specialist prescribes will be paid for by the VA. I didn't find it necessary to contact an outside advocate, I walked into the VA Prosthetics office and they gave me all the help I needed. I know there has been a lot of bad press about the VA but I have only had terrific experiences with Bay Pines (St. Petersburg), Haley (Tampa), and Miami VA.
