Another breathing question. Mom says she "can't breath through her nose". Does that mean anything significant? She doesn't have a cold.

She says she started having a little trouble breathing last night when dad burned the chicken tenders and the house got a little smoky. Also says when the furnace is running she can't breath very well.

Still waiting to hear back from the ALS clinic about this situation.

Because they are smaller, there is more resistance for air to move through the nasal passages than through the mouth. So when the breathing muscles become marginal, difficulty breathing through the nose can become noticeable and eventually significant. The difference in resistance can be noticed even by healthy people, and is why some folks use the "Breathe Right" nose strips. They physically expand part of the nasal passages reducing their resistance to air passage.

Trouble breathing through the nose and blowing his nose was one of my PALS early symptoms (he is bulbar onset)

We haven't actually solved that one I'm afraid.

He did buy those nose expander things, waited and waited for them to come, then the day they arrived said he didn't need them, even though he still has exactly the same nose problems ... go figure :)
