I was in hospital yesterday having my monthly infliximab infusion for ankylosing spondylitis. The young woman in the chair across from me was receiving the same thing for her Crohns. Her mom was with her as well. As a result I assumed she must be in her teens. Always a mistake.
After striking up a conversation (what else do you do if you're in the same room, on the same treatment for several hours?) I learn she's in her early twenties and about to enter a PhD program in Molecular Biology.
Her area of specialisation? MND. In particular, she's going to be doing her research at Latrobe University in the Atkin Lab.
Our infusion schedules should overlap again in about three months. It will be interesting to see how well she's settling into the program. It's great to see such young, energetic and intelligent people choosing to work on this horrible disease.
Just thought I'd share.
