My mother has had ALS for about 3 1/2 years, she is 77 yrs old. Has anyone experienced a loved one/self with an irritating cough. Comes and goes, she describes it as a tickle in her throat, and then she almost goes into a choking cough. A lozenger will relieve it. Her swallowing and eating is still good, Dr. Turnbull didn't think it was disease related. She describes her sinuses as not clear. The nursing home has tried different nose sprays, that may work temporarily. I am taking her to an ENT specialist in May, just wondering if anyone else has experinced this at all.
Thank you,

Lita

I cough a lot. Post nasal drip and acid reflux I think. It sometimes causes Laryngospasms which is scary but not life threatening.

ditto what ms pie said. cough scares everyone but me

Also, check the humidity. Sometimes low humidity makes me produce more secretions, then more postnasal drip. A humidifier in the bedroom has helped.

Allergy season has started early for us again this year. Post nasal drip is awful and I have the same problem . My cough assist does help.

In my case the constrictor muscles were the first to atrophy. They "direct" the post nasal drip and it trickles and gets thicker and makes me feel I am choking. I usually spit it up when it prevents swallowing water and it is always thick and real salty. It was maybe every 20 minutes 3 years ago to abut every 10 seconds now. I would try something to dry it up but my salivary glands were fried from radiation so my saliva is very thick and stringy anyway and I don't want to lose it completely.

Thank you everyone for your help. I will forward this on to my mom, God Bless

Lita
