Link between multiple sclerosis and als

Still freaking out about ALS, eh, person? What new symptoms have you come up with this year? How is your arm and thumb?

PS -- if what is happening to the ethnic group in that paper was a regular occurrence, there would be a lot more papers about it.

Keep in mind that it is a very very recent research and it claims to be the first study linking the two diseases in this way so who knows if it works like this even in the rest of the world.

If this is indeed the first study finding such a relationship, then we'll have to wait and see if other studies confirm the findings of this study. No need to get worked up about it until it's been confirmed in broader populations. Unless, of course, your family are recent emigrants from the area in question and might be related to some of the families that were observed to have this problem in the study.

So, how's your left arm, hand, and thumb these days, person? I take it that you've stopped bashing yourself in the head?

Yes it's all ok but I hope this genetic relationship regards that area only.

Seriously?
I just read the last thread from person about the Italian soccer players and the head bashing.

I had to stop reading, I was laughing so hard I damn near peed my pants.

trfogey, you seemed to have had much more patience last year! I admire you for what you do here and your bluntness!

I was interested in what was said about the thumb/hand/arm weakness as this is where my main issues are.
That, and speech, which I am convinced is from my multiple strokes.

I'll ask my questions on another thread after my MRS next week if my ALS specialists are still confused.

The only relevant thing I got from this article is, if you have MS, don't hang out in Iran!

person, good luck.

Cheers,
Casey

well one thing is sure they both end up the same way

My friend has ALS and her mom has MS. Anecdotal but interesting. Of course she has three siblings who do not, as of now, have any neurological ailments.

Ok now I am really scared.Any other experiences like this here?

I have 8 siblings. One is a sister with MS but I also have a littler brother that is an idiot. I'm more afraid of becoming an idiot than ever getting MS!

I have a grandfather with CIDP. I have ALS. My mom has hypertension. My dad had renal cancer. My brother can't keep his pants zipped. He has had MULTIPLE outbreaks of children because of this problem. I am VERY SCARED that my son will inherit this. PLEASE find a cure!

I usually have a great sense of humor. It is what has helped me make it through the tough times in life. Right now Im having a hard time after reading all of this as I must share with you that my sister passed away last November from Progressive MS and my mom is in the last stages of her battle with ALS. My grandfather suffered from a neurological disease that he never received a diagnoses from before he passed away. Hard to find the laughter here. L

my uncle had hunntings , i think it is possiable to run in familys like thyroid it can go 2 way hyper or hypo , why couldnt the electricty in the brain work in different ways

Interesting article in the Wall Street Journal today suggests possible link between ALS and MS. The connection: proteins and mutations related to iron delivery or absorption in the brain. According to the article, carriers of a specific gene mutation have higher levels of iron in the brain andd a fourfold increase in risk of ALS (this quoted from a 2004 study published in the Journal of Neurological Sciences).

But then how it is possible that soccer players (that have accumulation of protein in the head caused by repeated concussions with the ball) never develop MS but develop ALS?
