My dad seems to have alot of excess phlegm the last few days (I am wondering if it is allergies) but he doesn't have the muscle tone to cough it up. Is there anything he can do or take that would help?

Thanks!

Hi, If you can get more fluids into him it will thin out the phlegm and make it a little easier to cough up. However he may also need to consider a medication or a suction machine to help him. Cough assist machine also may help. Hope this helps you!

Ask your respiratory therapist to get your dad a nebulizer. A nebulizer is a machine that converts certain medications into a mist that can be easily inhaled. This allows the medication to reach the airways rapidly. My husband used a combination of Salbutamol and Mucomyst. The meds will thin the secretions so even the weakest cough should bring any secretions up. It helped Bob a great deal and we used it right till the end. And yes, lots of fluids. Take care. Yasmin
