Familial ALS and the SOD1 gene

I have found out that my Pals has this SOD1 gene. I have been reading a little, but not sure I quite get it.

Everybody has the gene, but certain mutations are associated with ALS?

I am told that there is a 50/50 chance of someone with the gene or the mutation, not sure, will pass it on to their children.

What does this mean for the children of the associated Pals? What about their grandchildren?

I am trying not to overreact to anything here.
