Default Dr. Said he needs to lose weight?

Hello my friends, is been a long time, I see some new faces. I have been absent for many months. I found myself in an ALS obsession that I needed a diversion from but sadly I am back as FALS struck again. Although it was so good to read some posts from all of you that despite my absensce I thought of regularly.

My mom's brother was diagnosed about a month ago

I am here with a question. His doctor has advised him to lose weight!?!?!?!?! When his daughter told me that I asked are you SURE? He is definitely heavy but not monstrously heavy. His symptoms are limited to his feet and legs right now he can still walk. He has joined the gym and working out frequently and on a diet.

Has anyone else been told to lose weight? I was of the thinking this is the LAST thing he should be doing right now.

He is quite tall and I would say about 50lbs from a relatively healthy body weight.

Yes, we were told this also by our new Neuro. See my thread "Big Belly" My PALS has severe back pain, and the thought was that if he lost a bit, it may help eliminate the back pain. He is 5'9" and 205 lbs. Recommended a slow weight loss plan, nothing drastic. He has lost about 7 lbs. We cut out sugar calories, and kept his high fat calories.

Question: did this come from his general "primary care" doc, or from the ALS specialist? I'd want to hear it from the neuro before acting on it.

I would definitely be sure that an ALS specialist gave me that advice before following it. My ALS team told me to lose weight and I am 5ft 8 inches 190 lbs. I could afford to lose 20 lbs but they said that once you start losing weight things begin to go downhill quickly.

If it helps any my Neuro told me not to lose any weight and I am very heavy for my 5'4" frame. I had some pseudo bulbar symptoms early on and i think he suspects there may be eating problems down the road.

Our ALS specialist told my husband to lose weight. Funny thing is that the progression was slower when he was actively losing the weight. When he stopped, the progression sped up.

My Neuro said no no no to losing weight! The first question he ask when he sees me is...your not losing weight are you? He is serious about it! He said maintaining weight is the best thing you can do. I would look into it!
