I am wanting to know if any of you have tried this method of medicine to help with symptoms and or to help slow progression and what your experiance has been? With that being said, have any of you experianced COQ10 and did it help at all?

Thanks, Rox

Hi Rox,

My partner did not try any homeopathic medicines for MND as neither of us believe they work. Others, naturally, may disagree and come up with examples. He did take COQ10 for a period of time, but has not noticed any impact on either his energy levels or progression. He discontinued mainly due to the cost. He still takes high doses of Vitamin C and vitamin E, and mulitvitamins. These are inexpensive and they are not likely to be doing any harm.

Keeping your weight up and avoiding stress have been qouted by many PALS as valid strategies.

Hi,

I am sure that if any PALS had tried these meds with success they would have already started threads about them.

Best wishes

ND

I used high (300mg) of Co-Q10 for, I believe, 180 days, ending recently. No help at all with muscles or strength. I really believe a balanced diet is the best thing. I do add vit.D, as I don't get much sun and findings show there is a deficiency commonly in patients with ALS... as well as in the general population. My clinic dietitian said 2,000mg is a good amount indefinitely.

Thank you. as all of you have done I feel certain that we are grasping at straws to see if anything will help slow this down. I appreciate your input.

Blessings, Rox

We have tried it ALL! I work in the alternative medicine field.....used to be a manager in a helath food store...did all of the vitamin buying. I have had extensive training in the area of homeopathy. We did COQ10. None of this worked for ALS and it can get very expensive. Don't waste your money.

I have been on rilutek and COQ10. I didn't see any improvement. The thing that helps me is keeping up my eating (and weight) and getting proper sleep. After a busy week-end trying to keep talking (using my dynavox) to my family or visitors I am exhausted. I use Monday to re-coup and notice I feel more energy on Tuesday again. I love to visit and communicate with people, but I feel it takes a lot out of me. I tire easily.

Look at Mike27's blog to see the supplements he takes. He's been around a long time. vitamins help? Who knows. I take vitE, vit C, and CoQ10.

Homeopathic Medicines are pseudoscience. Go to quackwatch.com or randi.org and search that topic to find out more.

coq10 is not Homeopathic Medicine.

I would not be so critical of homeopathic treatments. They were all that was around for thousands of years. Modern medicine has been around less than 100 years. Most, good, modern medicine is synthesized plants that have been proven to help.

Anything that might be of help and not harmful in another way, is well worth the try. What have we got to lose? I am one who believes that taking vitamins just gives you high octane urine and is throwing money away... unless you have a realistic deficiency of course.

Rox,
My husband tried acupuncture = -0-
tried Chinese herbal tea concoction from an herbalist and it definitely helps with throat congestion and speech. He takes a teaspoon in warm water before each meal. Can sometimes do with twice a day but no less without noticing a difference. This herbalist is on South Tacoma Way and being in Washington you might want to try contacting him in Tacoma in the Boo Han Shopping plaza. Can't guarantee it will work for you but it sure helps my husband. Good Luck!

"Thousands of years?!" WRONG. Samuel Hahnemann (1755-1843), a German physician, began formulating homeopathy's basic principles in the late 1700s.

Homeopathic products are made from minerals, botanical substances, and several other sources. If the original substance is soluble, one part is diluted with either nine or ninety-nine parts of distilled water and/or alcohol and shaken vigorously (succussed); if insoluble, it is finely ground and pulverized in similar proportions with powdered lactose (milk sugar). One part of the diluted medicine is then further diluted, and the process is repeated until the desired concentration is reached. Dilutions of 1 to 10 are designated by the Roman numeral X (1X = 1/10, 3X = 1/1,000, 6X = 1/1,000,000). Similarly, dilutions of 1 to 100 are designated by the Roman numeral C (1C = 1/100, 3C = 1/1,000,000, and so on). Most remedies today range from 6X to 30X, but products of 30C or more are marketed.

A 30X dilution means that the original substance has been diluted 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 times. Assuming that a cubic centimeter of water contains 15 drops, this number is greater than the number of drops of water that would fill a container more than 50 times the size of the Earth. Imagine placing a drop of red dye into such a container so that it disperses evenly. Homeopathy's "law of infinitesimals" is the equivalent of saying that any drop of water subsequently removed from that container will possess an essence of redness. Robert L. Park, Ph.D., a prominent physicist who is executive director of The American Physical Society, has noted that since the least amount of a substance in a solution is one molecule, a 30C solution would have to have at least one molecule of the original substance dissolved in a minimum of 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 molecules of water. This would require a container more than 30,000,000,000 times the size of the Earth.

I agree, but think some people are mixing up homeopathy and herbalism, the latter being completely different.

My mom has some success treating some of her ALS symptoms, especially anxiety, mucous and nerve pain. She has used homeopathy for many years, long before her ALS diagnosis. It is worth a try as it does not interfere with any other medications and both her GP and ALS doctor have given the okay. Even if all of this is just placebo effect for her....it is working on some level. Good Luck!
