I want to wish all my Canadian friends a happy Dominion Day (or Canada Day if you prefer). If you are a Newfoundlander, you are more likely recognizing today as Memorial Day to commemorate the wholesale slaughter of Newfoundland troops at the Battle of the Somme 94 years ago today and all the troops in all the wars who have died since.

John and all Canadians, Happy Dominion Day... or Canada Day. Bless all who have loved ones fighting... and all who are doing the fighting. It's very sobering to contemplate.

I just read a little article about Rick Mercer and he spoke of the Battle of Somme and it being the bloodiest day in Newfoundland history. The Newfoundland Regiment was wiped out on the battlefied of Beaumont-Hamel, France. 801 fighting Newfoundlers left the trenches and tried to smash through the German lines. Only 68 returned to answer roll call. May all Canadians pay tribute to those wonderful brave men.
