I've been unable to find any information about the Muscular Dystrophy Association on this forum, but I think they're worth pointing out. The MDA leads the way in research for some 40 different muscular dystrophy diseases (including ALS). I'd imagine if the MDA helped find a cure for one of their diseases, it would have a great effect on ALS research, since many muscular dystrophies have similarities.

They also have more celebrity clout, which can help raise more funds. Their Chairman, comedian Jerry Lewis, describes ALS as "the most debilitating, vicious of all the diseases in our organization." The actress Nancy O'Dell - who discusses how she lost her mother to ALS - is the ALS representative of the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA).
