How long until tongue atrophy

I'm still really concerned as I've been having increase in saliva and I noticed last night that it looks like a little groove on the right side of my tongue is more indented than the other side. I do have a scalloped tongue from my teeth, I think Ive had this for quite awhile. For those who have bulbar, how long unitl you noticed atrophy in the tongue? I have gotten a few fasciculations in the tongue but not on that side. I haven't had any in quite a few days..They aren't constant, just a quick twitch here and there. Any input would be appreciated. Anyone have any input on this? When I stick my tongue out you can notice the one side is more indented than the other...looks like a little chunk is missing. But when you relax the tongue it looks normal. I dont have any speech problems. Any input would be helpful. I had an appt with a nm specialist but I canceled it as my daughters second birthday party is this week and I didn't want to be depressed if they found something. Im due to have my baby mid December, so still 4 months away, and my symptoms still are progressing rapidly. Both hands and legs also get shaky after I do any activity. I have always been strong and fit, so I don't know what is going on.

the only thing to tell you is that you wont get an answer untill you are slurring or having problems with swallowing. Those dents dont mean anything if you can talk and eat/swallow and clean emg. I have that ragged tongue on the left side, 3 or 4 little dents. I showed my als specialist and she was not concerned and said it was maybe just teeth marks. My tongue does press up against my teeth alot. I told myself not to worry about these marks or twitching unless I start choking on liquids or slurring. If your tongue had real als atrophy I would think that you would be having some difficulties in any of these area's.

Have fun at the b-day, I just adore my kids b day parties! So much fun, let it take your mind of this for a bit.

Are you having any swallowing issues? Bulbar ALS usually starts with slurred speech. Swallowing issues would give the impression of excess saliva but you really aren't producing any more than usual. You're just not automatically swallowing it as you would normally with swallowing issues.

I don't look for atrophy in my tongue as long as I can still say, "Silly snakes slither slyly!"

Katmomma ... I didn't notice any atrophy in my tongue until my speech was almost gone. The neuro who dx me told me I had it, but it all looked OK to me size-wise. I thought what he was talking about were all the crevices on the surface, which I never used to have. I never had any teeth indents, but they are very, very common, and meaningless.

What made me realize there was something else different with my tongue was when a friend stuck out his tongue for some reason a few months ago, and it looked like a cow tongue to me ... this huge slab of pale meat in the mouth ... ugh! My tongue is really dainty now. I really never thought about tongue atrophy. When you can't talk and can't swallow, the size or appearance of your tongue is way down on the worry list.

What do i do ....my mothr's tongue has started sticking out of her mouth and getting trapped between the teeth . It is quite difficult to push it back iin the mouth. Does this happen commonly and if so how do i prevent any subsequent complication arising from the same.

Jim already has some tounge "issues" w/ fasiculations and gag reflux issues. He is starting to have "choking" episodes. Question is: is it happening more or are we noticing it more since his diagnosis. Not sure. He was diagnosed w/ MND/ALS syndrome 8/14/09.

Its happening more due to less frequent swallowing and more production of saliva.

There are ways to slow down the saliva, I use atropine drops under my tongue.

I have recently noticed tongue atrophy , since I've had less and less tongue movement it has certainly decreased in size I reckon .x
