Hi,

Do you know by when MRI and EMG results are ready? My hope is very shortly after the test!

I use a rule of thumb of two weeks for tests to be evaluated.
The only exception to that rule is if your neuro is present at the EMG exam. Then its the results are right there.

Am xperienced consultant or a technician knows what is going on during EMG test. So, in theory they can tell you there and then. However, medical ethics and in my view bureaucratic procedures usually mean that there is a few weeks gap between the test and its results.

I do not know about MRIs but assume that they can see what is going on once the scan is complete. Again, results are usually sent to your consultant who then evaluates them.

Hi- I am interested in this because I am having an EMG on June 30 to evaluate progressive muscle weakness and twitching. The neurologist (a specialist in neuromuscular disease and MS at a teaching hospital) will be conducting the EMG. should I expect that he will tell me then and there that I do or do not have ALS or some other neuromuscular disease?

Just trying to prepare-- have support people with me, if that's the case.

thanks--

Sandra

Sandra ... my first EMG was in a private doctor's office on a rather antiquated machine. It produced a tape that he had to send somewhere to be read, and it took two weeks for the results.

My second EMG was at a university ALS clinic, and I got the results immediately, along with the diagnosis. They had a gang of counselors waiting to descend on me with piles of literature, etc. I asked them to send me the written report when they wrote it up, which they did.

(Note ... I had already had a ton of tests eliminating other mimic diseases. If you still need screening to reject other possibilities they may not make a diagnosed on the spot.)

MRI is different. They send report to prescribing physician, and you have to get the results from him/her. At least, that's how my doctors work it.

Good luck!
