I already posted thar I'm a 19 years old girl and that I have spasticity/stiffness in both of my calves. I also started to have fasciculations in my legs a week after the stiffness started. Since two weeks I have a stiff neck and pain in my neck. But the newest symptom is a dry mouth especially at night for a couple of days:roll:. I couldn't sleep the last nights because I had no saliva in my mouth. Is a dry mouth a symptom of bulbar onset? Does this all point toward als?
Thanks for opinions, Lisa

Hi Lisaa,

I'm not an expert, just a former caregiver for my wife.
I would definately see a specialist though. If you think you might have ALS, that would be the FIRST thing I would do. That would either confirm or deny. If it is, you can get ahead of the game, so to speak, to find out the hows and the wherefores. If it's not, you can rule it out and move on to find out what it really is.

I'll be prayimg for you...

God bless you,

Greg

lisaa ... it doesn't sound like ALS to me. A dry mouth is not a symptom of bulbar onset. I've never heard of anyone having limb and bulbar onset simultaneously. "Fasciculations" are not an early symptom of ALS: they appear after weakness and atrophy. And it's EXTREMELY rare for someone your age to develop ALS.

As eirennach said, see a doctor if your problems persist. But nothing in what you describe sounds like ALS.

Lisa Dear, are you drinking enough water during the day or do you breathe with your mouth open during the night? Either naturally causes dry mouth. A chin strap would help at night. If your saliva glands aren't working well and you are drinking enough, you could drink water with lemon to stimulate them, or eat sour candies.

Are your neck and calves just sore from over exercising and do you have a good diet regiment? I don't believe you have to worry that you have a motor neuron disease at all.

Try to enjoy your young life. I know that when each of my 6 children were of college age, they didn't drink enough water... Our best of everything to you!
