We don't know if we are dealing with ego or not...but he didn't call us...we found out when we called to check on setting up an appointment...and his assistant told us that he doesn't want to do it because he doesn't think it will help (again because of the als diagnosis) and because Jim had voiced concerns that he wasn't a "thoracic specialist"

It was the neuro in his office that told him that the 19 doctors at the clinic agreed that this should be done...but now...because the ONE that would do the surgery backed out...it's off...

So...we're highly disappointed...and back to "hurry up and wait" to watch for progression.

We'll see if we can get into a spinal neuro-surgeon instead of this orthopede...and he just has his work cut out for him in the gym to maintain his legs until we can figure something else out.

But..what's with doctors NOT calling patients back and delegating news like this to their secretaries? It makes me think that this may be a blessing in disguise and maybe we're being redirected from a higher power to not have THIS guy do the surgery.

I'm just sorry to get hopes up and now have to share this news.

Tracy

I am sorry to hear this, but may be you are right and this guy should not be the one to do the surgery.
It may be a blessing in disguise.
I hope you find the right person eventually!

Wow, what kind of person behaves like that? What is wrong with him? I am sorry you are having this setback at the hands of a total clod, but I think you don't want a fool like that involved in what WILL be a beautiful story when this finally all falls into place. So mad for you!

hi tracy.
sorry to hear your latest news.
could you find someone else to do the surgery?
i do think its bad that he backed out but maybe he feels it would be too much of a responsibility if something went wrong or your husband started to deteriorate faster.
you do seem to have alot more doctors on your side to do the surgery.
i suppose its a case of if you dont try it you will never know, your husband wont be loosing out if it does not work .
my thoughts are with you both:)

Tracy,
Hi, I thinkwhat Olly said was what happened. I am so sorry, keep looking for another doc. What if you just went to one and let them make a determination, maybe another doc would not even mention the als.. I am grasping I know, but gosh something has to be the answer.. We are thinking wiht you.

Tracy,

I second what everyone else has said, and have nothing new to add. Its a hitch, but don't let it stop you!

I wonder if any of these Dr's have asked themselves the question, "What if I am wrong about this?". Wouldn't it make sense to address all of the possibilities?

I'm with the others that think you just haven't gotten to the right person to do the surgery yet. Here's hoping you find that person very soon!

Zaphoon

That is awful to read about, especially the manner in which you found out!~

Keep hoping!

Tracy,

I'm sorry you had to hear about the cancellation in such an insensitive manner. Even my gruff PCP, with crappy bedside manner, manages to pick up the phone for updates (granted they can be 45 second phone calls :-?). I agree with the other posters. Don't give up, this just wasn't the one to do it.

Take care,

Robert
