I developed brisk reflexes a year into my neurology journey, i know this because the neurologist asked if i had always had brisk reflexes and was ever told that when i was a child..... I said no then later went home and looked at my report from months earlier from a local neuro that said my reflexes were 1. She could have looked at my chart and knew i did not have brisk reflexes before....... Then it developed into hyperreflexia, babiski response and clonus. I must say that it has come in handy a few times. Like i am always dropping pencils but i catch them with my knees, real quick.... (Sitting at a desk).. This moring i went to hang my towel and dropped it only to catch it with my left hand before i even realized it was dropping! If i talk with my hands and slap my knees they jump way high... It was so funny at work one time when i was sitting at the desk and i dropped my pencil and tried to stop it with my lap, then it fell and i tried to catch it with my knees, and this happened real fast! My co worker said, i thought you were spazzing out!! She could not see the pencil, and i said no i was trying to catch it before it hit the floor and i would have to bend for it, that still makes me laugh. When the docs jerk my ankles they can go on for daysssssssssss.................I find myself laughing hysterically but other people are looking at me like well i dont think thats funny!! Well i like to laugh, sorry!

This is all making us wonder why the neuro who gave us the lower limb onset als diagnosis also diagnosed my husband with brisk reflexes (but we've already been wondering about the als diagnosis anyway).

When he hit him with the hammer all over...my husband said he felt like maybe they were a little more active than normal, but he was scared as hell knowing what they were looking for.

When I had him read this thread...he said he's never experienced anything like what you're describing in his life.

huh...........

Tag~

if you have a copy of your husbands chart, look and see what the rating was. They may not be hyper just mildly brisk. Like I said that Mine were way more brisk last spring and SLIGHLTY better now, in my own opinion anyway.

SAM~

thanks for the advice on swimming. I did it and it was great, infact I went today while kids at school. It was good to move my body again with out the pain or weakness, Now I know why elderly people swim all the time. It was so easy to move, not like in real life! I am sticking with this one! After a year and half of no working out, this has made me happy. thnks!

Way to go April. Was wondering how that went for ya. I am going to give that a go myself now.

BTW this will be a workout for me. I sink like a rock in water.

Jeff~

Yes, it was good. I went for 35 minutes. I swam and then did a lunge thing, just whatever I wanted. AND, no cramps from it at all. It did send off a festival off twitches in my feet/ankle/calf but not worried about that, and they have settled. Almost a cramp in my foot but never happen. I would recomend this to any of us with muscle issue's or weakness. It just felt good to be at the gym.

My husband ADORES his pool workouts! He says they make him feel almost normal again (well, other than people looking at him like "what the he*$ is that guy doing?" but I think he's just paranoid)

sammantha
i am like that with dropping things.
it seems like i am a coiled spring waiting to burst some days.
my fellow workers noticed i dropped things more way before my symptoms started.
this makes me think that at that time even though i did not feel anything wrong my reflexes were very brisk in my arms.

april.
glad the swimming is working out,i hope it helps.
last time i tried was over 2yrs ago but my lower body just sinks and is too weak to keep afloat so i can not do one stroke.

Hi guys,
I wanted to add something sad but funny but true.. Muscle sinks so those with ALS float.. So funny what you said Olly, I cant do a stroke with weakness, but hey maybe I will float on my back, that just might work..lol
Hope floats muscle sinks

The ability to float is why i highly recommended never floating in the Ocean!! Yeah, yeah sounds like common sense, i guess i can lack that from time to time..... It can become so peaceful and your body is so relaxed in not in pressure pain that you can float away to sea before you realize it........ I have a pool now and i will swim for excersize then just float on my back and look at the sky and blowing trees and pretend like i am flying, its the best therapy in the world.... I am so sorry olly that you cannot get the benefits of swimming and April you are more than welcome for the advice and i am glad swimming makes you happy!!! Sam

tac0602 When i was first told i had brisk reflexes i did not notice them whatsoever....... It wasnt until a year ago when it affected more parts of my body that these things started happening. When my doc tests my elbow she holds it against my body and it sends shiver all over, like the heebee jeebees. When i was first diagnosed with brisk reflexes it was only in my legs, and only noticeable to a doctor.

I dont know if your adressing me Jules, but yes..... My face was the last place to start the twitches... When they first started i looked like a rabbit someday's then they too would die down, now i feel more like shivers/twitches in my chin and lip area.... My tongue vibrates on the sides every now and then but it has been doing that for years.

I get that vibrating thing on the side of my tongue from time to time. Not consistent. My face use to twitch alot as well. I get a funny feeling around my chin alot, oh the joys!

Guess what, my calf is sore from the pool!! I cant beleive it, but I got really over did it when I started to run under water and do lunges. It felt to easy and good, I should have started off slow. the good thing about it is that I have a pain and I know why!!! I am going again tomorrow.

The muscles around my face twitch sometimes, and I notice that occasionally my facial muscles tire, especially after exercising. It comes and goes. My tongue is still in good shape though.
