hi, guys, I spent the better part of yesterday in the emergency room, I had a pounding headache behind my left eye for about 3 days and wanted to make sure I was not bleeding into my brain. The last time I was in an emergency room was about 10 years ago, so me to go, I had to really be feeling bad. Had to wait all day long, it was really a horrible experience it was crowded and one person was there with her 4 year old son, who was ripping and running around, screaming at the top of his lungs while his mother just continued to talk to someone about his asthma attack:roll: I wanted to just grab the mother and tell her to get off the darn cell phone and pay some attention to your son, everytime the kid screamed I would cringe from the pain. He was not screaming because of any kind of pain, he was just playing, if he indeed was having an asthma attack, I can assure you it had already passed the way he was screaming. They did not do much in the E.R, they gave me an mri just to make sure I did not have anything life threatning, squeezed my head in various spots and told my to go to my own doctor in the next few days. I am going to go today in about an hour, I will let you know what he says, also my blood presuure was high, around 180/90. margaret

Hi Margaret, I am so sorry to hear about your experience in the ER. How horrible, I hate going there for similar reasons. I once worked as an ER liaison and had to explain/soothe/manipulate parents who didn't understand triage and why they could expect to wait 7 hours for care. Nasty nasty memories.

An ER story (can't help it; all my friends have to endure it:-D): I took my daughter once with abdominal pain and after 4 hours of waiting the resident diagnosed her with "high blood sugar" (no s**t sherlock, she is diabetic) and sent her home. Then miraculously the pain went away and all was well. About 9 months later it happened again and I begged her, are you sure you want to go to ER? Remember what happened last time.....So she sucked it up and sure enough the pain went away, so I put her on the bus back to college. Well after 10 hours of travel a new pain arrived, kinda different than the last. Huh. Had her go to ER at college. Her appendix had burst while still at home. Apparently the pain goes away when it bursts. Who knew? Surgeon who removed it said it had scar tissue all over it indicating it had burst and healed previously (what, not high blood sugar?). He said the positioning of the appendix in the abdomen prevented the infection (?) from spreading through out the body and that she was so lucky. Apparently!

Margaret, it is good that you went and I sure hope it truly is "nothing serious" despite the severity and duration of the pain. I look forward to hearing your update.

Hi Margaret

Sorry, headaches are the worse, I don't have them often, but when I do, I can not understand how people that have them often deal with it, I hope you let us know how your doing.

Lydia, I have my own ER. story.

Well, my 7 year old is diabetic, also has asthma, He was having an asthma attack, so off to the ER.

I told triage nurse, he is diabetic, told admitting nurse, told nurse that came back to do vitals, told Dr. that came in to see him, and the blood work came back and they were surprised that his blood sugar was a little high for a 7 year old, 148.

Then I told them, steroids to treat his attack will make blood sugar go crazy, please use something else. They brought in meds, I kind of felt funny that they gave him liquid to drink , but surely they knew NO STEROIDS, Well, 1/2 hr later he begins to get sick, I pull out my personal sugar tester and low and behold 420 sugar reading, I call in the DR. and not to tell him how happy I was either. Long story short, What should have been Trip to ER, 2 treatments, home. Turned into 3 days in ICU, and the funny part, they wanted me to take a class on how to monitor and take care of my child with his sugar.

Margaret,

PLEASE , If none of the doctors think this was blood pressure related, find out who is the best glaucoma specialist in your area, and make an appointment. It sounds like it could have been a narrow angle glaucoma attack. (sometimes called "closed" angle) It differs from the common type of glaucoma in that "open" angle, which the vast majority of people have. Open angle has no symptoms really, but is detected during a standard pressure test in an eye exam.

Closed angle attacks are often mistaken for migraines. People at more at risk are women who are far sighted with brown eyes. Having Reynaud's is often part of their health history. It is also more common in those that are Asian. Seriously, if you're blue eyed and near sighted it is much less likely because of the structure within your eye. It is unlikely that it would have been discovered at an ER visit.

Closed angle does not show up with the pressure test usually. The doctor has to use this little device that is like a contact lens on a stick, that is mirrored (hard to explain) to check for it. Even after I was diagnosed with it, I tried going to just a regular ophthalmologist for annual exam and he said he thought my eye was fine (one had been fixed and one hadn't at that point) I had an appointment with the specialist the very next day, and she found that the closure was increased to the point where that eye needed the surgery ASAP.

We were actually just talking about this on the forum, as Lonna (sukilou) has narrow angle glaucoma too.... the fix is the easiest procedure I've ever had, the doctor uses a laser to make a drain hole at the 12 o'clock position in the iris. I was able to wear eye makeup for the "event" and drive myself home immediately afterward.

When I was first diagnosed, she (my glaucoma specialist, who I just love) was so surprised to see it, you could tell she wasn't expecting it, as it really is pretty rare. She sent me for a second opinion just to verify. I went to Eye and Ear Hospital in New York, and had a sonogram (ultrasound) of my eyes. Really interesting. I laid on my back in the exam room, this eye cup thing (that was missing the bottom) was fitted inside my eyelid all around, to make a dam so that saline could be poured on top of my eye, and then that little probe that is used for the sonogram just went in the water. Nothing ever touched my eye other than saline. (You know how they use gel when the sonogram is on the outside of the body, as it needs the liquid to work) The tech put in numbing drops first, so this was completely pain free, I couldn't feel a thing. Then, he turned out the lights in the room, and started the sonogram. As soon as the room got darker, and there was even a window in the room so it wasn't pitch black anyway, and my eye dilated, even I could see the drains close on the monitor screen, it was so obvious.

So, there's my little dissertation on narrow angle glaucoma. :) Get yourself checked out, as it could be so many things, I just wanted to write about this because from personal experience I know how easily it is missed.

margaret,
Bless your heart dear, I hope you are feeling better today. Anxious to hear what your gp tells you.
I'll be thinking about you today,
hugs,
-b

Yikes Rose, how awful sounding! Margaret I hope you are doing ok and that your doctor gave you the all-clear

Lydia

Sorry about your day

Margaret, So sorry to hear about your ordeal at the emergency room. I really think there should be a way to separate people into different sections. I love kids, but when you have a pounding headache, well you know. Hope it gets better.

Hi Margaret...Your blood pressure was high. Just wondering if they told you it was because of the pain you were in....? Been there done that. Hope you're feeling better. Let us know how your doc appointment goes.

OOOOOH! Parents with out-of-control kids are the worst!

thanks guys for all your replies. I did not get back on yesterday as my head was still hurting, saw my regular doc yesterday checked me out, said he did not know for sure what was causing it. I got what looks like a book of lab tests, he is testing for lyme again(a more extensive test I beleive) complete blood panels in addition to B12, magnesium, potassium, sodium and even syphiliss and aids. Looked at it briefly and there are about 15 different tests including the regular panels and cbc, etc, Rose that is on my top priority, having my eyes checked, I think I mentioned on a previous post that I felt a squeezing sensation in my head and pressure behind my eyes, and yes I have dark brown eyes, have not seen an eye doctor in years and it is is time to get on that today. Do not get me wrong I love kids, I am raising my 2 granchildren , age 13 and 14. What bothered me was the mthers total disregard for the other patients, she just kept screaming, nathan don't do this, don't do that, sit down, leave the chairs alone:lol:and at no time did she get off her cell phone for a minute to do anything about it. I love my regular doctor, he is sooo concerned and knows I am really ill, he know how much I hate running to all kind of doctors and going for tests, I have been seeing him for about 15 years, so he knows I am not a hypochondraic. He told me yesterday, he thinks somehow everything is related. I see the rheumy again on friday. I watched a show last night called mystery diagnosis on the health station, the women had symptoms like mine and after years of non-specific test results, she was finally (AFTER 5 YEARS), was diagnosed with chronic lyme, she had several tests for it some coming back positive and others negative, but finally after years of suffering they did a specific test and it came back conclusive and now she is slowly getting better. Well have to go now, I have to drive to Chicago today to do a few errands with my younger daughter(her car is in the shop} I am feeling a little better today so I quess I can do it, thanks to all, margaret

oops forgot to mention, my doctor thinks my pressure was just high because of the pain and being nervous and upset, it was normal yesterday.

Margaret, I just popped on the site here for a second and saw your reply. I probably won't be back online until sometime tonight, but send me a message if you want more input about the narrow angle. It is hard for a doctor to miss, and often times a person really needs to see a glaucoma specialist for it to be found.

I hope you get to feeling better, regardless of the cause.

thanks rose, yes I would like more info, I too have to leave out for awhile this morning, will be back later in the afternoon, again thanks, margaret

margaret,
Glad you're feeling a little better - hope you enjoy your journey today with your daughter to Chicago. Sounds like your gp was very thorough with the tests he ordered.

I live right in the middle of the winter storm warning that is coming thru, so we have about one-fourth inch of ice on top of about 2 inches of snow. Supposed to get 6 or so more inches of snow tonight. Can't wait, I've got the sleds and hot choc ready!

take good care and keep us posted,
-b

margaret

I am glad you are feeling a little better, take it easy today, try not to push it. Hope some of your test show something. I am glad you have one good DR. you trust and takes time with you. Sometimes I think my GP knows more and cares more than the Specialist.

Brenda, I am in the storm too. So coloring books and hot chocolate are the order of the day.Take care.
